I think we reserved the Creekside Suite. There is a small shred of hope that we can still make it there but work is stacking up. We’ll need to decide this weekend so the B&B has time to fill the cancellation but I’ll be sure and post before we cancel in case a BF member can claim it. I had also hoped to enter a bike in the Concours but it must have already been filled up when I tried to enter quite a while ago.

FYI: On Sunday May 1st, Cayucos is scheduled to have their Spring Street Faire. If your route goes through Cayucos, take extra caution as there will be more vehicular traffic and foot traffic than normal.

Well I just mount a new set of Tofo 28c tubular tires on a wheel set with a 28 tooth Freewheel rebuilt by Pastor Bob. So I think at least my wheels are ready for the ride!😜


though I expect to walk part of the way based on past experience. Just got my ticket and the wife rented us a place to stay. I am looking forward to the event esp the Sat displays.

Anybody know the official schedule? Currently the website shows a schedule for the 2021 ride (which was cancelled). Since it only states days of the week, it may be the same schedule, but it would be nice if someone could update the web page. The people who run Eroica have always had a crappy web presence. The registration process is confusing, backed up by the many people here who have posted as such.

After long flights and drives, then putting our bikes back together, I'd like to go for a short ride to get the kinks out of my body and bike. In 2018 and 2019 myself and several others did just that. From Velo Cambria to Sebastian's in San Simeon it's 9 miles, 18 round trip.


18 miles round trip, 700 feet of gentle rolling hill climbing. Optional lunch at Sebastian's in San Simeon.

Proposing an 11am start from Velo Cambria, gets us back in time to register, sniff around the booths before and after the ride, and do the 3 S's before dinner.

Great time to meet other BFer's!

i agree, that large cog has a distinctive oval and round hole lightening pattern. I’m very familiar with the 34T large cog on the Suntour 888 Perfect or ProCompe freewheels and madscrambler’s has larger oval and is even larger. This type is also pictured on Sheldon Brown’s Suntour freewheel page and by my count in both pictures the large cog is 38T(!!!!), biggest I’ve ever seen and I think they made.

madscrambler, can you confirm? And what type of rear derailleur are you using with this freewheel?

Before I rent a car, thought I'd check to see if any Los Angelinos wanted to ride share up to Cambria. I arrive LAX around 11A on that Friday, should have all my bike, etc, by noon. My return flight is on the following Tuesday, so have a flexible schedule to return (hopefully to vicinity of Westwood) on Monday. Happy to help cover gas $ and food for the trip. I can also look into uber to a meetup point if it's a hassle to get to LAX. Thanks for considering!

you guys have sharp eyes it is a 38 tooth gear! I thought it was 28. I use a Campy Rally derailer.

Assuming you consulted with the Pastor on this, the oft maligned Rally is not trusted by all.

That being said, I can attest that they can work very well with a pretty wide setup especially when the frame was built for it.

Looks like this is "only" 32 so...




Mine was flawless in 2017 Leroica when I was ripping down a long gravel descent ending up in high gear and flying flat out.

Jim's prowess was on full display, the faster I went, the more stable it felt, amazing.

What is the simplest solution?

I'm still sorting out my bike ride. I think I'll be ok with one larger bottle, but a few comments on here have me considering a second water bottle cage. A second cage is a bit more versatile I suppose.

This bike didn't come with bottle cage braze-ons, so the one cage is now attached with King Cage's Universal Support Bolts. Not terribly elegant, but they work.
To put on a second cage, I suppose I'll repeat the setup on the seat tube. Which may mean moving the Zefal pump to the seatstay as shown. It fits pretty well there, but not bomb-proof. I have a velcro strap by the brake, and it feels fairly secure, but two good potholes could send the pump flying. (I haven't ridden it with this setup yet.) Yet another option is to carry a second water bottle in a handlebar bag...

If I want to mount the pump under the top tube, I'd have to add an extra clamp. In this seatstay location, there is a 5/8 - 3/4" gap at the bottom.

My water plan for the three climbs no fries route is one large bottle and a 1 liter bladder in my medium sized Acorn saddle bag. Worked perfectly in Tucson, Arizona a few weeks ago on the Spring Training ride. We had a coupla days where it got pretty damn warm, or hot for a PNWer. I refilled my water bottle from that bladder on those days. Eroica will have more places to stop for water. Here's an anotated map of the route I plan on doing:



Rest stops from the 2018 and 2019 versions:
1. Cayucas pier, 15 miles from strat. It'll cool and early in the morning, maybe I'll force myself to drink half a bottle before then? Food and drinks, refill bottle
2. Top of Santa Rita, 13 miles from last rest stop, but a good amount of climbing. Still morning at this point, 2019 it was foggy at the top. Top off bottle.
3. Riding through Templeton if for some reason you drank all your water there's lots of places to stop and fill up. If you can make it from the top of Santa Rita to the next rest stop, you can have a beer at the next rest stop. 12 miles from top of Santa Rita
4. Halter Ranch. The section from the brewpub (last rest stop) to Halter Ranch is about 17 miles, it'll probably be the warmest part of the ride, and some brutal but not super long climbing, so make sure you're hydrated at the last rest stop and refill.
5. Halter to top of Cypress, 9 miles from last rest stop. The climbing is brutal like Kiler, but much longer. It does get cooler as you near the top, but a lot of people will dismount and push.

I'm 205# on a good day and as @Spaghetti Legs likes to say, the bicycle gods cry when they watch me climb. Heat is my kryptonite. I brought 2 large bottles last 2 times and I never bottomed out on water.

My way of saying I'm reading lots of whinging about water. You can get by on any of the routes with 1 large bottle, 2 if you're concerned.

Has anyone heard of a rumor that Eroica California is considering changing the routes of the Santa Lucia, La Via Dello Scalatore, and Heroic Routes to accommodate the Cayucos Street Faire that is scheduled to take place on the same date and location (Sunday May 1st on Ocean Ave)?

It would certainly make the official poster pointless as it depicts Pillar Rock from the Cayucos Pier. I'm not sure how they could dodge Cayucos without a complete rerouting.

Ok, the count down has begun! I guess I can legitimately get excited. Who am I fooling, I’ve been stoked for months! The Colnago is ready , just need to finish up the pedals and new white leather straps. I am still riding with the steel spindle Superleggeri but will change to the Ti spindle and new straps just before the event. I have increased my Sunday rides to 42 miles and feeling pretty strong with that so the PB route should not be an issue , as well as any pre-riding that happens. I may do one more climb up one of our canyons just to boost my climbing but probably not necessary. I may bring another bike just to have a back up. I don’t think I need it ….but , you know…..N+1.
