Super Sport and Enik conversions

Caught up with my old principal (two previous to retirement...he drove 2.5 hours each way to spend 1 hour at my retirement soirée), and of course asked if he needed a bicycle (since I still have tooooo mannnnyyyy from the Great CoVid Student Bike Giveaway). He said yeah for he and his wife but that his back could probably use a more upright position.

Enter the SuperSport. $50 or so later, I pitched the idea. He loved it.

It was mostly smooth though spacers for the 7 speed conversion were a pain, for some reason. Chain line is meh but good for his purposes.

Was able to squeeze 28 (29) mm tyres in there, found a Sora derailleur and used the existing RX100. Alex rims are light and smooth (see click OCD thread). Right shifters index decently well (I will never use these again for the record), brakes are cheaply superb and the house brand tyres from Chain Reaction cycles are nice and grippy. Should do road well, and light gravel okay. A Lemond saddle with a prostate friendly cut out was in order.

So after asking advice on the shifters for the Super Sport, I figured out that the left shifters just plain STB. I figured out a work around. Not sure what it was but it worked.

Crappy. Do Not Buy...

I like the minimalist red in spots honestly. Usually I would go garish with the red cables, saddle, grips.

RSX brakes shined up. They are great stoppers. Tires are Chain Reaction house brand “Road Essentials” and have extra rubber for flat prevention in the center.

Left shifter good. Right shifter baaaa-d

Enik is still in baby stages...had to remove some internal rust, but the frame is actually anthracite-coal dark gray rather than black and has pink swirls that are understated.

Rather than mess around with stack heights and removal of the fixed cup (tried every method), will just leave it with some tricolor goodness. Just have to figure out what crank will be a nice compact version for the build.

Pink swirl and anthracite coal

Tange 5 stoutness

Thelma says, this hobby is stupid. Feed me some dang dinner in the AC.

About 15 of my own, plus a few belonging to my sons. Most of mine are frames and boxes of parts for the frames.

I do have about 20ish in the portable, temporary bike storage unit in my driveway from the Great Covid student bike giveaway that I need to build up and sell/give away. Apparently 35 given away + 20 still left = stupid.

Was Enik a thing over there in the States? Or is yours just made it there through some possibly German expat?

Ahhh, I have about 15 in misc states of completion. Amazingly, some are actually together, and ridable. My two Peugeots though, the PX-10 and the PXN-10, have to share a seatpost/seat (dumb), as the Simplex seatpost on the PXN-10 had a frozen bolt that I had to drill out, so that post is out of commission for the moment.

Probably about half ridable, 1/4 in various states of 'project', and 1/4 in framesets.

Complete: Rosita Rossin Performance EL, Bella Basso Gap, Cresty Cannondale, Victoria Van Tuyl, Bumblebeena Nishiki Tri A, Trixie Trek and Mattybecane (MBK gravel), Also Candy Cannondale MTB.
Incomplete: Mercian, Faggin, Ciocc, Peugeot Super Competition, Daccordi, Losa, and Massi (Spanish not Masi), Fauxsin and Corratec. Then I have a Favorite, Gitane and a Mondial City bike.

Stupid, I know. I guess that is 20, not 15.

What size is your Super Competition? I have a blue one in 54, and just picked up one in 56 or 57, thinking it would be a better size. It for sure is, but the frame/fork combo is a mongrel. However, it is a more comfy fit

56 I think. It has a pretty green color repaint, but it’s bubbling under.

Oddly it measures at 55 CTC but not accessible due to it’s place in the queue. It’s an Isoard for the British market, which I think is a PX-10, but might be PY? Not sure.

It actually might be a 54 after all...

Mine is accessible, but a bit ugly. I tore it apart this weekend when we took a trip to the mountains. Unfortunately the corrosion didn't just buff off!

Thanks for making me feel better, Dave! I've got it down to these categories -

Rideable keepers -
- '02 Mercian Vincitore
- '82 Mercian Colorado
- '76 Puch Royal X
- '73 Raleigh Competition
- '71 Gitane TdF

Rideable for sale -
- '88 Centurion LeMans
- '88 Specialized Sirrus

Project keeper -
- 1970s? Tim Neenan Lighthouse

Projects for sale -
- '86 Cannondale ST400 reduced to just a frame
- '93 Bianchi Eros frameset
- '86 Univega Arrowpace that needs full servicing and cables - at least I put decent tires on it!

Beater fun bike -
- '92 Trek 820 converted to budget dingle drive with drops

I'm preparing to move into a nicer place that, alas, lacks decent bike storage - but the urge to acquire MORE never goes away. I looked long and hard at a 1987 Stumpjumper that's really too big for me, but complete for $125 ...

Yeah, the bike giveaway made me overbuy. On the upside, this thread makes bikes number 35 and 36 given away.

How are you doing with the move? I like the dirt drop beater!

Mine is in decent shape, but the paint bubbles are yucky, Dave.

I am trying to imagine what color would be cool to paint it. I am not one for restoration...so Peugeot white and blue are out. Maybe I will go full crazy? Keep it emerald green with purple lugs or something.

For some reason I was thinking it was 56cm, but I think I can make 54 work.

The move and all that goes with it is going well, complete with some wise caution along the way! Retirement grows closer and closer, which sweetens things up!

The dirt drop beater is an entry level drug of a bike - that is what is fueling the growing desire for the Stumpjumper, which is too big for mountain biking, but would be close to ideal for a drop bar conversion into a rugged touring rig. I keep looking longingly at Hennessy hammocks and Trangia 28 stoves and Opinel knives and thinking, "S24O, S24O ..."

Back to the Enik...

Surprisingly was able to fit 32s in it. Have to decide on the best 7 or 8 speed cassette combo since it is a 1x.

The STX RD is one of my favorites to work with. I think it will make 8 speed.

What would be the best combo to use with a 42 ring and the STX RD... 12-30? 12-28? Would that give enough of a bailout for minor hills.

Sub 24-hour Overnight - kind of a mini-tour. Grant at Rivendell popularized these a while back. The goal is to go take a relatively short ride to some place you can camp overnight, then ride back the next day. Cycle camping for the terminally overscheduled. The vision I have in my head is hammock camping, tee-ninetsy Trangia 28/mini stove, basic clothes, and I bet I could get it all into my Carradice Nelson longflap saddlebag. Ride from here to one of the many area parks, set up the hammock, cook on the Trangia, chill, sleep, get up, breakfast on the Trangia, pack it all up and ride back. If I got wild, I'd splurge for a good rando bag to carry a little more stuff, possibly even a small soft side cooler for fresh ingredients. I might be able to persuade my son to do it with me, and my local riding buddy would probably LOVE to have a mini-break from family as well. Not quite Iron John, pass the talking stick around stuff, but still ... a mini retreat to the cycling monastery ...
