This might not be the right forum, but seems the closest. I want a medium sized handlebar bag in which I can carry camera, snacks, map, etc. A thousand years ago, I had an awful one I used on century rides; it was awful because it was unstable and bounced up and down.

I go search for a good handlebar bag that doesn't come above handlebar level, is squarish, and affixes to handlebars securely, and can pop off easily. I find complexity. A nice bag, but in the fine print, it requires something called a decaleur, which itself requires a front rack or something else. Photos of required extra hardware not included.

Is there such a thing as a good simple handlebar bag that is stable? Recommendations?

I would go with Topeak. Their handlebar bags have a quick release mount. Yes, it does take some space on the handlebars but it is very secure and they have several pockets and compartments.

I use a double stem to fit a QR bag mount on the lower one ,
then you can use KLICKfix and Ortlieb bar mounts,
they when directly clamped on the handlebar will have the top above it.

SJS has a welded T bracket clamps onto the threadless steerer
A combination part in 50 and 100 mm extensions
T is using 7/8 Tube .. So grip shifters can go on them too..

Regular threadless stems.. Pick the angle and length
for the lower stem and you can fit Ortliebs
and others, like KF mount using Carradice super C bags

in that desired level with the bars, position.

I use the H-100. It has a separate small pocket inside the large main compartment, a large zippered outside front pocket and two slide pockets on the side. It's very stable and has a quick release. It also has a clear map case on top. It's a great handlebar bag. There are other makes, but this one seems to have it all for my needs.

Threadless steerers make this all so simple..
2nd stem replaces 40mm of spacers. SJS piece uses less.

give up the top of bag level with the top of the bars requirement
and you can just attach the Bar Bag mount on direct .. It will be fine..

I'm looking for a handlebar bag too: must be rigid, have strong and solid clamp and be waterproof. The Otrileb bag is probably as close it gets.

The strap on to the bar bag occupies some hand grip space , ..

I use a Vaude handlebar bag, and it works well. Uses Klik mounts, I believe.

The bag I have isn't waterproof, but comes with a rain cover that is.

About as good as I've found. I have a Vaude too but it's very floppy and not at all waterproof.

Though most are sewn, Even Vaude has a waterproof model ,
but Ortlieb concentrated on that feature .

Klickfix's are quite similar functionally to Ortliebs Bar bag mount,
but not interchangeable.
KF has a lot of ways to mount their stuff..

I have a nearly new carradice super C handlebar bag with klickfix mounting (like the link in post 11) Ill sell. It is hard sided and box-like, and waterproof for anything short of submersion.

A good bag, but I ended up using the decaleur/rack combo plus a larger bag on most of my bikes...

I have light and occasionally a video on my handlebar, and don't want to deal with bag sticking up and blocking.

I've got that one. Very pleased with it - it's stable, waterproof so far, and pops off and on in a flash.

You should ensure that you won't have any interference from cables, first.

Klick sells their Molded parts to other companies, wholesale, they sew up the bags,
the mount to the bar, (1) is included with the a new Bag.

Klickfix or Ortleib mounting is the best. Instant release but secure enough for downhill, offroad tracks. The key is the cable that wraps around the stem top prevent rotation.
My Carradice bar bag comes level with the stem and has a map holder

Jandd Has several nice handlebar bags, including a completely waterproof one. I used there tour pack II for quite a long time.

I had initially thought the quick release bracket wouldn't be up to task, but it never failed (plus it is relatively easy to change over to other bikes).

Well, that was one of the ones that confused me about how it is affixed, but then it became moot since they are out of stock. They look very nice, though.

I use a second stem on my old SR threaded gooseneck,works great.You can get any bag you like,mount it with a backboard,then you can move it up and down where you like it.You can mount it upsidedown if need be.The factory mount doesn't have to stay where they decide it needs to be.
