Marine Grease

I just purchased some BIG BOX store Schwinns, and want to do maintenance sweep thru. Is it ok to use marine grease in the crank and head set bearings?

Thanks

Marine grease is pretty sticky compared to general purpose grease.

Yes. It works just fine. The cranks won't spin as freely but you won't notice pedaling. Big advantage - if you use enough, water and dirt will not get in even if the seals are poor. (Big box Schwinn; they probably are.) Also marinbe grease is cheap so using a lot doesn't affect wallet size. Drawback - plan ahead and work cleanly. The stuff is almost as detergent/solvent resistant as it is waterproof.

If you do a good job, it holds up for years.

I also use marine grease because cheap and durable (I hope). I got one of
mini grease guns and it is really clean to use.

I didn't consider it may be hard to get out since it is more resistant to water and solvent. Also didn't consider it having more friction. mmmhhhh.

Marine grease is a perfect lube for bike bearings. I have a suspicion that the tubes of designer cycle greases were filled from a drum of marine grease.

Ditto. Phil grease sure looks, smells and feels like marine grease.

I'd argue that complex lithium soap based grease has better properties (and a bit higher price, but not outrageously - 800 g can for about 5 euros), but marine grease is perfectly fine.

Modern ones (last decade at least), with all the additives, have similar water washout resistance, lower cold working temp (important to those riding in freezing winter), don't dry out as quickly... though for bike bearings, as long as they're cleaned and re-lubed annually, most any grease will be fine. Having said that, not all the "marine" greases are the same either.
