Check out Nashbar's Streetwise tires... my friend has them on his folding MTB which he uses for commuting duty, and he says they have great punture resistence, and all the thing I've read have been good, and there only like 10-12 dollars. Although, I think they only go up to 26*1.75. Schwalbe Big Apples are supposed to be nice, but they are very expensive. I'd try the Nashbars out, though.

My late 90's Rockhopper Comp, after a particularly muddy/wet ride that involved chucking it over a fence...

@scott clement: Definitely one of the best looking bikes I have ever seen, well done!
Are you referring to the first pic? My 1999 Merida looks the same "down there", but the tubing is different. Here´s the only pic I have of it:
I´m from Sweden and I have no idea if you guys even have the Merida brand in the US.

You have your work cut out for you on that one. Best of luck, does that have campy deraillieur by chance or is it just a sticker?

Reallllly looking forward to moving out of my tiny apartment. It's been awhile since I had space and my bike maintenance has gone down the tubes. Been riding a ton and that's a good thing...

I used to ride a Jamis Dakar and the difference is like night and day. Now-the Jamis was a 2005 model and I'm sure the advances in geometry from then until now make a big difference in ride quality. For instance the Giant is much more slack and feels much more stable on descents.
I work at a shop and have ridden a lot of high end bikes and I can honestly say that the Trance rides as well as any of the uber-expensive boutique frames out there. For the money I just don't know if you can beat it.

I had a budget of about $400 plus a pile of nice parts. I wanted a bike for short track XC racing. Here's what I came up with.
1999 Kona Muni Mula
Avid Speed Dial SL levers
Deore M590 shifters
Deore XT front derailleur
Deore XT rear derailleur
Deore XT crankset
Avid Single Digit 5 brakes
Ritchey Comp bar
Lizard Skins grips
Specialized Phenom saddle
Continental Speed King 2.3 tires
Mavic X221 rims
Deore LX M570 rear hub
Kona front hub
Interloc seat post
25.6 pounds
The stock parts that I got with the bike weren't bad (older XT/LX mix), but I was able to shave a couple of pounds off the bike just installing the parts I already had from a bike that I had over-upgraded a couple of years ago.

nice build for $400!!!
What's up with those tires though? A couple of Small Block 8's or Cross Marks won't brake the bank...
