I'm 59 and ride a fixed gear bike but it has front and rear brakes...Dura-Ace no less! If I was in my teens or 20's and didn't have any other responsibilities beside myself I'd probably ride without brakes also. Is riding with brakes safer? Probably yes.

Riding a fixed gear bike for me renewed the love of cycling I had in my younger days. It really is addictive. I enjoy riding my geared bikes also but the fixed gear bikes are a LOT more fun.

Most fixed gear riders I see that don't ride with brakes can control their bikes remarkably well...better than most. If that situation comes where a brake is required to save your life, then a bike with no brakes will be dicey at best. However, anticipating motorists is crucial. I find my attention span and focus on the road and other motorists is a lot higher when I'm on my fixed gear bike. That alone has warded off a few incidents that might have made me make an emergency stop.

A brakeless fixed is designed for use in a controlled environment. Taking one to the street (the polar opposite of a controlled environment!) without adding at least one caliper is like pulling the pin on a grenade; it's just a matter of time before something bad happens.

I wouldn't have considered it, even in the olden days when this thread was young.

brakeless fixies have brakes. The riders' legs are the brakes. A skilled rider with good judgment controls the situation better than almost any other controls, except for the most controlling infra, none of which exist in N. America.

Most states probably say that a bike must have brakes to legally ride them on the road. Many probably will state that the brakes must be sufficient to produce a skid on both wheels.

Don't see a true fixie, which is intended for track riding doing that.

c1. Brakes? Plural? Only one brake - on rear wheel.. Attach front brake and braking surface/road interface doubled. Also forward motion places most weight on front wheel, therefore greater effect when slowing said wheel
2.. "almost" - hmm, If emergency stop needed, see 1 above

If anyone suggested that rear wheel braking only on car was ok if the driver was highly skilled, he'd be laughed out of court.

Pfft lube is for chumps. I wax my chain with the earwax of the endangered albino fluffy snooted warbler. I only melt the wax in a repurposed soviet-era slow cooker that was originally used as a parts washer on the Soyuz because it gives me the variable harmonics needed to make sure the melted wax matches the infrared spectrum of the reflection of the chain. Anything less, you might as well be riding a walmart bike.
