check this handlebar

a friend came up today with this handlebar, the grooves tells that has been tightned a bit too much but still i have no idea if is safe or not. the groves you can feel on the touch but there are not any signs of crack.

If you can actually feel the indentation, they would be questionable to me. To the point of not using them. If it is just wear that you can’t feel as an indentation, they would be fine.

Not easy to tell from the photos, I'd err on the side of caution and recommend that they should not be used. Maybe your friend doesn't weigh so much, and doesn't ride so hard, in which case they might be fine, but broken handlebar is one of the mechanical failures I prefer to avoid if at all possible.

Not sure the dents are a potential failure point, I'm guessing they are not. What bothers me is the ham-fisted clod who did this. If it were mine, I'd use it, but I recommend that you do not, and send them to me.

I probably wouldn't ride them if they had indents and would suggest others do it unless they are mechanically inclined and willing to keep a very close eye on it in this case I wouldn't trust your friend with them.

+1, well said, I think having something to check carefully before a ride beyond simple things like tire pressure would be dispiriting and is not something I would want impacting my rides and definitely not left for friends or family.

I'm also with the other posters that it may be fine but you won't know for sure and since it's for a friend who may or may not recognize a developing crack it's something I would worry about. A handlebar breaking is one of the most dangerous failures you can have on a bike.

Thanks for the tip.
If necessary i can make some mold of the indent to show how they are.

Not worth your trouble. Just replace the bars. It's not so much a discussion of whether it will fail or won't.

It's what happens IF it does fail.

Like, a very bad wipeout and likely injury.

replace them

Likelihood is low but the impact is high. What's your risk tolerance?
