The Great 2024 Le Grande Garage Free-fest! FREE! 1970s Dawes Galaxy frame!
Okay, I've been looking forward to doing this for a long time, so I'm really excited. I've been inspired to reduce the size of the collection/fleet/garbage pile. The inspiration for this has come from a few sources, and as I have been figuring out my fit and the type of bikes I like and what qualities I like in them, I realize it is time. Sooooo...
PREFACE!
What the heck is even happening?
Well, I'm giving away free bikes and frames. That's pretty much it!
Why are you doing this?
A bout of temporary insanity? A fit of madness? Out of space? Perhaps those Huffys do ride better than anyone thinks! Hmm...things to ponder!
Maybe a hint of all of the above, but the truth, as we all know, is that it's way more fun to give than receive. And I have been the recipient of more than a fair share of kindness, free-age, and help. I have been truly blessed in my life, both from members on the forum, and in other areas of my life. It's time to give back! And I'm really excited to do so!
My hope is that whomever becomes the recipient/custodian can find their own way to give back and pay it forward, in whatever shape that takes. Maybe it's a little extra kindness towards someone, maybe it's writing that letter to an estranged family member they've been scared to write, maybe it's helping that old lady across the street or helping that person fix their flat tire on the side of the road. Or maybe it's just helping @cudak888 lift his gorgeous Huffy onto that new bike mount he made!
How does it work?
Well, if you want it, it's yours! However, while I admit I have zero control over anything once it leaves my hands, I will ask our dear bike flippers to stay thine hands! Yes, you could probably make a little money off of it. So could I have. But that isn't the point. Some things are just better than making a buck, and while I'm a firm believer in releasing obligations from things that aren't yours, let's at least try to give the folks who either A) have been looking for one of these for a while, or B), someone that is going to really derive a lot of joy from owning/fixing/riding the first shot at these. If I get no takers, I will be moving things on to the local co-op to decide from there.
Location, location, location...
As they always say! I'm to the southeast of the Denver, CO metro area. My first preference is for you to just come and get it from me, of course! I'm happy to help send any bikes/frames/parts along with anyone that might help them make their journey to you, and if you've got ideas for facilitation, I'm all ears. I am also thinking about attending Cino this year, so I could potentially bring some stuff up there with me.
I'm really, really, hoping I don't have to pack up the whole bikes and ship them out, however, I will figure out a way to do so for the right person. I would also really, really prefer not to pay for shipping, since I paid for the bikes when I first got them and would hope to not have to pay for them once I take leave of them
Thanks for looking, and let's have some fun! I've got a LOT of items I'm going to be posting, and we're going to be going from 'wow' to 'yeeow!' to 'holy cow!!!' hahaha
2nd up...
A likely early 1970s Dawes Galaxy! Back when I was first getting entranced by vintage bikes, but knew absolutely nothing, I was entranced by fancy Nervex-like lugs, on anything. Now that I like Huffys, some might argue I've devolved from even knowing nothing, but I digress! Here is a great restoration candidate! I don't know the exact year of this one, but here we go. We have a frame + fork combo, and the chrome is in pretty good shape on this one! I cannot detect any dings, dents, or unwanted creases in the frame or fork. Now! One potential issue with this one is the fork - while the chrome looks great, the dropout on one side of the fork is slightly loose...almost like they just forgot to braze the thing at all...ala Raleigh! You just gotta love these BBBBs (Bike-Boom British Bicycles) and all their cost cutting. Braze? Unnecessary! lol
In any case, this would make a great project for...someone...out there! Is it you? Probably. With 95% certainty, it could be.
Right now the paint is stripped off the frame, w/ some remnants of the citri-strip that I used. The fork still has the light blue paint. Why does it seem like all repaints are this 'light blue' color! Not the only one I've seen, by a longshot!
While this one needs some work, those pretty lugs could dazzle that pretty girl in the moonlight. Or just the old guys that stumble on by in nerdy admiration.
It even has its own appreciation society! https://www.bikeforums.net/touring/5...n-society.html
It's a pretty exclusive club, but here is your free ticket in! Size seems to be around a 58-59, but I can get an exact measurement of seat and top tube if you need them.

This is cool but 58-59 is a little short for me. If you have time to take measurements and it turns out to be 60 or above with a reasonably proportional top tube I might be interested.
This would not be a high priority project for me, so don't hesitate to give it to somebody else who needs/wants it more.

Dave,
It is fugly, but It could be freshened up with a new coat of Lavender like the Old Nago, and be a bit more presentable. If it sits around for a few months let me know, and maybe it can come to PKI for a new finish.

Welp, considering I can barely give it away for free, there may be an additional challenge of justifying a $200 powdercoat on the ol' gal

Dave,
I have been known to do crazier things like buying an Old Nago and sending the usable parts to NY, and letting PKI, do their thing with the frame. And it still sits here waiting to leave for CO. Smiles, MH

I'm kinda surprised there's no interest. I would totally take this if it were an inch taller.

If I cut it in half, and add in a splice, would you take it?
Bottom line, I know the co-op will junk it. Too much work for them, and zero curb appeal. So I'm hoping someone could be interested. It will make a great looking frame w/ the right work, with 'work' being the key work hah!

If no one else is interested, I am! I have been holding back for other interested parties to take priority because a) I live in New York and b) my veterinarian gave me eight bicycle frames I'm in the process of building up and giving away myself. None like the beauties with which you are spreading good will, but I am trying to do my part.
However, I do enjoy a fancy lug and wouldn't mind trying my hand at painting! Put me on your list of options before junking. I would pay for shipping, of course.

Almost 20 years ago, I had a "Huffy" which was actually a Carlton production bike. Reynolds 531 sticker, "Genuine English Lightweight" decal, nice lugs, thicker dropouts, a really nice frame with ugly paint. I tried to ride it for a semester but it was just too small so I sold it for pretty much nothing.

Okay, I'm getting one person's bike out the door, so I will focus on this one next! Once I get it packed up, I'll get you a BikeFlights quote. For a frameset, I'm seeing between $60-$80 or so. I'll PM/email you for your info when she's all packed up and we'll go from there. Thanks!
