Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Fixed Gear Conversion w/ Vertical Dropouts & Rear Hub Spacing

So on ebay, I purchased a Masi Coltello Road Frame w/ an Alpha Q carbon fork for only $235. Such a good deal, couldn't turn it down. But now I realize that the thing is, I ride fixed and the frame has vertical dropouts. How would I make sure the chain tension is tight? Would I have to somehow find the right ratio and chain length to make sure the tension remains tight? And also, I didn't even think about it when I bought it, do you think the spacing for the rear hub would be too large to insert my rear wheel into the dropouts as my rear wheel is a single gear? The frameset arrives next Wednesday and I want to get some of my answers clarified before it arrives so I know what to do. Thanks!

I posted this in Bike Mechanics too, but wasn't sure if that was the right spot so I'm posting it here too

By the way, I can either run a 46x16 or 46x18

Chain tension would be an issue; but it can be solved in many different ways; for the most proper and most aesthetically appealing way, you can use a special white industries eno eccentric hub. But there are also cheaper ways, such as a half link (tedious), finding the magic gear ratio (lots of guess work), and a rear derailleur type tensioner (singlespeed only; the chain would otherwise jump if you ran fixed).

Repeating what was said here and in the mech's forum... the eccentric hub is the way to go.

Since you already have a fixed gear why not set it up with a bunch of gears and all that stupid crap?
