Anyone Ever Use Toe Clips With BearTrap Style Pedals?
Has anyone used toe clips and straps with the Bear Trap style pedals?
I was sort of gifted a set of Union pedals, I didn't think I would ever use them- more "BMX-y" or "mountain bikey" than I would go for. I got an idea to just throw them on my Voyageur- and I pretty much like them. I've also decided that I really don't like not being connected to the pedals- so I thought it might be nice to try clips on them.

I have used open half clips with bear claws on a couple of bikes the setup seems to work fine and is a nice compromise for a street communter bike.

Everyone who mountain biked in the early 80's used toe clips and straps on bear paw type pedals.

If they're true round style bear traps, I've had much more luck running powergrips with them.
I found it tough to flip the pedal over with my toe.

I've got a Schwinn Passage, and use bear traps and toeclips, it's the only thing that felt comfortable and stable on a big bike frame and size 13 shoes. I also have an older 1981 Voyageur with a similar set-up.

Well, you mean rat trap pedals aka serrated aluminum or chrome steel teeth? Rode thousands of miles (5000-7000-10,000+ ?) with Christophe toe clips and leather straps. Never had a wreck where I couldn't shed the pedal. Never heard them called "bear trap". Circa 1973-1980 on my Grand Jubilee.

Ah...I wondered. Same principle, different design. Having grown up with clips & straps, very comfortable to use with one exception. My right foot was susceptible to nerve issues if I got the strap a tad to tight on that side. Don't see why the clip wouldn't bolt up, might have to bend the clip to the curve or shim it. The inside to outside strap position will require some fiddling as it looks to have four possible positions, two of which are diagonal.

I had those same pedals on my 1984 Univega Alpina Ultima and used them with Specialized MTB toe clips (cutting edge tech in 1984) and Campagnolo straps (so I could go extra fast). When I restored the bike last year after collecting dust and rust for 25 years, the clips and straps were brittle, but I found a pair of strapless toe clips (Delta, I think) that worked fine.
That said, as I rode it more, I ended up swapping the pedals and clips for an SPD setup.

I replaced pedals on a bike- tried the old clips on the pedals, and I needed a washer- so I was just going without until I get a new set of clips. I did a ride the other night on that bike- and I realized how much I depend on having my foot affixed to the pedal. Especially at stops- getting the pedal in position to start up.
Someday I may go to clipless, but for now I'm happy with clips and straps (and not having to have special shoes and such)
As far as the porpoise for the thread- I wasn't sure the rounded edge would work well with the clips. I've found that I really like ATB type pedals with clips, and don't like the quill style pedals with or without clips. I feel as if the larger area of the bear trap style pedal may distribute the weight/force over a larger area of the sole of my shoe.

What I was talking about- the surface of the pedal that the clip attaches to is rounded instead of flat. I had to bend the mounting surface of the clip to match the arc of the pedal cage.
I had to take them off last night. WICKED toe overlap. Because the pedal is already larger (from front to back) than an ordinary pedal- the forward extension of the clip REALLY limited the range the wheel could turn. I seriously could not turn out of the driveway while pedaling.
This is on a a 1986 Voyageur.

Back then they made small cage attachments that took up the space so you cage mounted properly on the Suntour XC Pro pedals. The XC Pro pedals were all I ran, I'm sure I still have some of those attachments, I'll look and post a photo later.

The stoker's crank on our tandem has Avenir mtb-type pedals, black , plastic, and very purposeful-looking. They have standard Christophe-type clips w/straps. They seem to work just fine.

I'm now leaning towards Power Grips on these pedals on this bike. I really like the pedals, I just would like to have my feet secured.
