Soma Saga, Late 90s??

Hi folks,
A co-volunteer at our local bike co-op has a Soma Saga that he got as an "as is" donation to the co-op last summer. are primary market is MTBs, hybrids and city bikes. High end tourers & road bikes tend to move very slow. Don't know what he paid for it. He wants to sell it so he can get a fat tire bike to ride on the beach.
It's in very good condition with only a few chips and scratches.
The specs & components:
Seat tube = 55cm, Top tube = 57cm. Both CTC. Tange Prestige tubing
Phil Wood hubs laced to anodized Sun rims. Appear to be tandem hubs with NDS threaded for drag brake? Didn't count spokes.
DiaCompe Cantis
Nitto bars & seat post.
Ritchey stem & 3X crankset.
Shimano 9 speed with XT derailleurs & indexing bar end shifters.
Alloy finders & HD rear rack.
Tires are mis matched, but that will be corrected.

If you need additional info, please email me.
Pix will follow shortly since I am fighting with my phone!
Van

Thanks & regards,

Hate to say it but the hubs are potentially worth more than the bike. Soma isn't a big or famous brand, they make decent stuff that's meant to be all day reliable but not something you'd usually brag about. The rest of the parts are a nice touring bike build from 20 years ago, though that style of anodized Sun rim could put the wheels into the 90s. I'd expect it to sell for 300-600 but it could take a while to get 600.

How much in a hurry is he and how good is he at selling bikes?

Basically a touring bike could command a nice premium over a similarly decked road bike, but it would take time to find the buyer willing to pay top dollars for it. Heck lowering the price a bit often doesn't move then much sooner.

On the ability to sale goes being able to clean up the bike so it presents it's best, being able to take better pictures, and putting together a good engaging paragraph that makes you want to buy the bike. Believe it or not that alone could make or cost you a few hundred. For starters straighten that rear rack so it is parallel to the ground and fit the fenders so they follow the contour of the tire _perfectly_.

Also if he wants top money he should wait for early spring

I bought the disc version of this frame. It is definitely in the upper tier of steel touring bike frames.

Soma no longer makes the disc and rim-brake Soma Saga frames.

Trek has ended their 520 line.

For someone who wants a good steel frame touring bike, with a steel (not aluminum) fork, they might be willing to pay some money for this.

Thanks for the feedback.

Waiting til spring is a good idea. That will give us time to do a full service and get in proper order. I don’t think my friend is going to do much beach riding in the next couple of months.
Cheers,
Van
