Specialized Allez - 1" headset?

Hi - I've got a specialized allez frame, I know it's a bit older, but not exactly what year. It seems to have a 1" steer tube, and I don't have a stem. Any good ideas on where to get a stem and/or a guess as to year?

On the good side, I just found a never-installed VIVO rear derailleur to go on it.

Is the steer tube threaded or threadless? 1" quill stems for threaded steer tubes are very easy to find. Threadless steer tubes only require a shim so that they can be used with 1 1/8" stems.
What sort of shifter will you use for that derailleur?

If you are doing a threaded headset then I would recommend the Cinelli 1A, it is a really great looking stem and as someone who is using one currently I love it. However if you were trying to modernize the Factory Five Titan stem is a neat option and looks pretty good and will allow you to use 31.8 bars. If you wanted to be more correct Specialized I believe in the time period of the 1" threaded stuff was using Nitto stems and they still make excellent quality stems. You can also do a conversion which Nitto sells that will adapt a 1" threaded set up for 1 1/8 threadless stems and you could have your pick of the litter.

As far as the derailleur that is a mountain bike derailleur and I am unsure of its compatibility but you may be able to get it to work on a road shifter should you go that route.

As far as year of the bike you would probably need to provide a serial number and pictures of the bike in the C&V Appraisals sub-fourm.

Unless you're really married to the vintage look of a classic "7" stem, i'd do the 1-1/8 adapter and 3.1mm stem.
If you use an aluminum adapter, there's not much weight difference over a quill stem, and it allows you to easily change the length and height to get the bike fit dialed in.
Also, there are so many different bar widths and bends available in 31.8 that they just don't make in 25.6mm

It's a 1" threadless headset guys. I'm using an old profile aerobar setup. Both this derailleur and my shifter are from before every group had a different shift pull - I'm assume this is compatible with 9 speed or less Shimano MTB, which was the same as road shifting cable pull before 11sp.
I think I'll use a shim for a 1 1/8 stem. I actually have a few 1" threadless stems in the house on the mini and junior race BMX bikes, but they're too short.

So - forgot to follow up on this - it turns out it's a 2001. Thought I'd post the answer since my thread came up in another search I did.
2001 Specialized Allez

I'm now running Shimano 5700 105 shifters and front derailleur, Ultegra rear derailleur.
