Campagnolo chain tool. is it needed ????
Hi,
I have a 9 speed Campy Chorus chain to be installed.
The bike shop owner said you need a special tool, a regular chain breaker tool will take it apart.......but you need to " peen" the rivet.
He has a Park tool one that does that.
Is this true **********???? Does anyone have experience doing this with a Campy 9 speed chain ???
I took the old chain off with a regular chain breaker.
Maybe I should try to put the pin back on the old chain and see what happens ???
He has the tool in his other bike shop, and will bring it to the shop I go to Thursday.
Again....appreciate any and all help

True. Better is to just get a quick link (re-usable link) and skip the tool. KMC Missing Link 9R | For Shimano, SRAM, Campy (kmcchain.us) Sold in bike shops or on the net. Shop around for best price if that matters. Make sure the Campy nutters (most don't fit into the nutters category BTW) don't see you're using a Taiwanese chain link or you will be shunned.

What the heck? When I looked at the link I provided I thought it said for Campy too. Not positive about that but I think it fits the Campy 9 speed. Shoot them an email to be sure or maybe another poster will chime in with an answer.

You'd think the shop owner would have suggested a quick link

IIRC it is at the 12 speed campy level that there is huge discussion on need for the tool and peening or will an unauthorized quick link work.

i like the idea of a quick link....kmc calls it "missing link"
I'll let all know as soon as I hear from kmc.
Thanks again for all the replies

While I and others have never had an issue with Missing Link this is what KNC says:
IS KMC MISSING LINK COMPATIBLE WITH SHIMANO CHAIN, SRAM CHAIN, OR CAMPY CHAIN?
Yes, KMC constructs Missing Link I, II, 9, and 10 for 7.3mm, 7.1mm, 6.6mm, and 5.9mm respectively; all Missing Links are compatible with Sram, Shimano, and Campy equivalent chains.

Full disclosure on my last order from Chain Reaction I bought a few Wippermann to try and like them, no tools needed to install or remove, re-usable and $4.50.

There's really no reason to use only a Campy chain. There should be plenty of others with quick links available. A properly fit quick link will have .1-.2mm of clearance between the inner links and the outer links. Less is too tight and more is a sloppy fit.

I know chains are hard to come by at the moment, but just get a KMC X9 chain (or heck, an X10 will work if that's easier to find) with its reusable link and put that on by hand. Sell the Campagnolo chain to someone else who must have a full on match. I mean I've been known to remove a perfectly working Shimano DA or 600 (well both on different bikes actually) headset to replace it with a record headset on a bike that was all Campagnolo (and once replaced a no name seatpost binder bolt with a Campagnolo one - regret that as the Campagnolo ones break so much more easily), but I'm not about to be bothered with making sure my chains match the groupset.

As other have said, it is required, IF you put it back together with a pin (Although I have put mine back together with my park CT-5 and it hasn't come apart yet).
Most of us get a connex link or some other master link (I have 3 KMC's in package) and as long as you don't short the chain when new, you never need to peen that rivet so you never need that tool.
