There's been some research among endurance runners on associative vs. dissociative cognitive styles. Roughly, associative = tuning in and dissociative = tuning out. Those who tune in pay attention to the road surface, their breathing, their stride, monitoring their HR, environmental changes, etc. Dissociative runners do much less of this. I think there may be some research trying to correlate cognitive styles with performance, but I don't think the causality goes from cognitive style to performance so I never bothered to think that changing styles would improve my performance.
Of course single track downhill mountain biking is all about reading the trail or line. I mtb’d exclusively for 12 years (a hiatus from the road) and it was all about focus, picking a line, speed management, body and weight positioning and not getting launched (which happened quite frequently the first couple of years - with only one nasty injury). I would liken it to being in an immersive video game, where concentration, quick reactions and fun mix. My back no longer can tolerate the jarring of drops and slamming over obstacles. My wife couldn’t be happier about it. Have to say that riding trails has helped with road bike skills.

”Safa” Brian was the camera man. He’s the one with the beard and long hair. His thing is downhilling as fast as he can, sometimes with pros, doing insane speed. The key word is insane. He has a YouTube channel, SAFA, where he bombs descents here and abroad. Don’t know how long he will be on this planet. Talk about reading the road!

I'm always on it, trying to be aware of everything . . . except that I never look at the scenery unless I'm stopped. It's all about process for me. I was at the doctor's and the PA was taking my numbers and vitals, etc., we're chatting, and she turns to me and says, "You're an engineer." Well, that's not exactly true, just how my mind works, but I hope she takes up writing if she hasn't already. She's doing the same thing, but on a personal level. Me, I've heard the sound of one tire thumping.
This is all just engineering. They don't just figure out how to make something, they figure out how to make it for the least money or the quickest or whatever optimization is desired. That's all this is.
