Having my shadow stretch out in front of me this morning as I was westbound reminds me that the fall equinox is upon us. Though it can happen at any time of year in the right direction, for those of us with E/W grid roads, the sun is rising and setting directly in more eyes than usual.

I remind myself with this, and now is a good time to refresh:

And I like "autumnal equinox" better. I mean, how often do you get to use the word "autumnal"?

The term "Chicagohenge" gets used here. We get a week or so where the sun rises/sets directly between tall buildings and is perfectly aligned with the city grid. It looks very cool, but does make for some challenging visibility for motorist (and cyclists).

Good point. After researching..

1) Next March I'll get to use "vernal" equinox. "Venereal" gets a fair amount of usage, but vernal probably trails even autumnal...
2) For our friends in the southern hemisphere, it appears I should use "March" or "September" equinox. However, all the places I've lived in the southern hemisphere didn't mess with the whole E/W grid thing to begin with, so not sure how inclusive I really need to be..

There is a small town in eastern Utah named Vernal. I had a friend from there. A mutual friend used to joke with him that at exactly noon on the vernal equinox, one can go to this town and place an egg on its end in the middle of Main Street, and it will balance.

Autumnal, while perhaps not common, comes up with some frequency in describing a great many things about the season. But I don't think I've ever heard vernal used in any connection but with the equinox.

I think your Archaic English is a little off here.

There is "Doth" (Do) and also "Don ("Do on' or "Doth on") and "Doff" ("Do off".) One might "Doth on" one's cycling cap ..... but I think even back before bicycles, one would have said "Don."

Also I think there is a difference (for most of us) between a "jimmy hat" and a "cycling cap," but I accept that many people have many practices different from my own.

My Jimmy Hat comment was in direct response to the venereal disease issue. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of antibiotics.

BTW...I think "doff" is too underused these days. I try to work into hat conversations/stories whenever possible.

I wondered if "cycling cap" was a synonym for intimate rainwear with which I was not familiar ... perhaps one specifically associated with autumnal disease. "Why does it hurt when I 9ee? I hope didn't catch a dose of Equinox."
