Seattle to San Francisco - 1100 miles - with Video Proof

Hey everyone. This past summer, my brother and I did some credit card touring from Seattle to San Francisco to raise money for LIVESTRONG. We rode 1,100 miles in 11 days.

Along the way, we recorded a bunch of it which I have finally finished editing together into an almost 28 minute video. I just thought I'd post this up here in case anyone was interested in watching our epic voyage. This time of year, it's nice to see some nice cycling routes when it's too nasty to ride them.

Some Trip Details:
  • We rode about 100 miles per day with a single day off in the middle.
  • We had a chase vehicle and met every 20-25 miles for more food, beverage, and tubes (as needed).
  • Only my brother and I rode the full 11 days. A third rode with us on the first day only and the fourth joined us for the last 5 days.
  • Everything was shot on a GoPro HD, Canon, or iPhone.
  • The entire movie was edited with iMovie.
https://vimeo.com/34739676

Hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Thanks for sharing that video. I live in CA, so I liked the WA and OR parts best. You did a nice job editing it and I commend you for doing the project and raising money for charity. Good on ya.

Excellent video and congrats for a very cool accomplishment, that was a lot of miles for only 11 days.....just curious, what resources did you use to select your exact route?

We started with a book on west coast touring that had several suggested routes up and down the coast. Then we went into Google Maps and plotted out the entire tour day by day and turn by turn. That definitely took some time but was well worth it. We knew that we wanted to ride about 100 miles each day and planned our camping locations based on which ones were close to the 100 miles marks. And most of the rest stops were just small turn-offs on the road, another great reason for Google Maps.

The year before, we rode from Louisville KY to Philadelphia PA (700 miles in 7 days) and did our planning the same way. The good/bad part of that trip was that we had a lot more options on where to stay. Things get pretty desolate on the west coast sometimes.

Wow. I did an organized escorted ride called the S2SF down the Seattle/San Francisco US101/CA1 stretch last Sept. S2SF raises money for African education. We only did 80(ish) per day and took about two weeks! lol Way to string the centuries together.

Did you do the ride on the Roubaix mentioned in your signature? I used a lower-end 105 Roubaix when I rode it. Turned out great for some of the stretches like Mendocino County on CA-1 where they've got those nice banked turns and it's worth riding hard.

Yes, I did take my Roubaix on the ride and yes, it was the perfect bike for the trip. Those banked turns on every inlet were just awesome. The other guys were on a Kish, a Cannondale, and a Litespeed. Here's a pic of my bike from the trip - complete with blinky lights, cue sheet on the stem, and LIVESTRONG bracelet on the seatpost.

LOL. Hey, so just curious. What was your favorite moment?

Mine was shooting down from that 7ish% 800ft gain hill...the one AFTER Leggett Hill on a pretty hot afternoon, to a cold breeze, a banked turn and waves crashing on seastacks. We stayed at Westport that night, so the day was almost over. I think second place was near Yachats where it was flat and I had this epic tailwind and it was the first day where my mono weakness was gone (rode out sick on day 1).

Sooo cool to see somebody else who got to do that route. It's bringing back a lot of emotions and memories from that trip.

Trying to narrow it down to just a single moment from the entire trip is really difficult. There was so much that I'd consider a favorite. Here are a few of the highlights for me.
  • Riding down the coast of WA on a day that never seemed to stop raining.
  • Pedaling through the Redwoods on the Avenue of the Giants.
  • Watching the scenery change along the way.
  • The Leggett Hill decent. (I'm on board for that one)
  • Camping right on the beach.
  • The feeling of accomplishment when we crossed the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • The contrast of urban riding in San Francisco compared to the rest of the trip.
  • Spending so much time riding with my brother.

If I could do it all again, I would start right now. It was just an amazing trip. I think a self supported tandem trip would be pretty awesome next time.

Video was cool. Have you guys read the article about Livestrong in Outside magazine? Interesting read, a little biased but didn't realize what Livestrong actually does till I read it.

Not a bad article. Almost as long as my video. Personally, I've always liked that LIVESTRONG focuses on increasing awareness and supporting the cancer community. Have dealt with a lot of cancer in my family, LIVESTRONG has proven itself a great resource and support network during some of the darkest times. I have met several of the people there, made some good friends within the organization, and support what they do.

Regardless of the outcome of the Lance allegations, LIVESTRONG is still a great organization doing great work for people in need. And as long as they continue supporting their mission, I'll continue supporting LIVESTRONG.
