Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What is seldom mentioned is that high levels of testosterone can cause increased estrogen levels in individuals who also produce large amounts of the enzyme aromatase (aka estrogen synthase). Aromatase can convert testosterone to estrogen. Everyone has this to some degree and it provides some heart protective benefits among other things. But in dopers or in individuals who produce abnormally high amounts of aromatase, it can cause unwanted side effects. This is why some dopers develop gynocomastia and some don't, it depends on how much of the testosterone is getting converted. This is also important for men being treated for low testosterone levels. It is important to find out if the low level is because you aren't producing testosterone or because you are overproducing aromatase. If you try to treat low T levels caused by high aromatase levels with supplemental testosterone alone, you have a higher likelyhood of developing unwanted side effects. There is a class of drugs on the market called aromatase inhibitors, which are currently being used to treat estrogen sensitive cancers like uterine or breast cancer. These drugs are very expensive but are being investigated as possible adjuncts to testosterone therapy to make sure that the testosterone you take, stays testosterone.

Yup, as Rob posted above (PSIMET), over 85% of all chamois creams do NOT contain parabens anymore. The ones that do are legacy brands that have converted traditional skin moisturizer recipes into chamois creams. (Tell your wives, GFs, chicadees to check the labels on THEIR creams). I highlight the major downfalls of that very preliminary study, here.

Keep in mind two major things: 1.) there are many brands that are offering really reall great, pure, and effective chamois creams out there, and 2.) parabens are not the only things to look for, also sulfites and propylene glycol.

I think it would only apply to those of you inclined to the padded tights and consequently, chamois-cream. They're still wrong about the rest of us

Before anyone accuses me of sexist and insensitivity, yes, I am just joking here; I have the uttermost respect for women, and sympathetic to any cancer sufferers, and until recently, tried to support every local event Susan G Komen puts on.

No worries, I got the joke. But if women could get bigger breasts by rubbing on some cream without any bad side effects like cancer, I don't think you'd be able to keep a product like that on the shelves

Fwiw - they quote Mike Zerinskas at the end of the article. mike used to race on PSIMET and was a frequent poster on here. He moved to Colorado and started a team that we get to sponsor - PSIMET/Zilla. He started balmco recently and has donea great job as an authority for chamois cream, embro, etc.

Used chamois cream for the first time on a 30 mile ride today. I've never experienced saddle sores, but after having a sample pack I thought I'd try it. Applied directly over chamois. It really made the ride more comfortable. Almost zero friction; very nice.
