threaded fork - canti brake hanger blocks wrench flats on threaded race
I'm rebuilding a mid-90's bike, and in the process swapping the stem. The previous stem had a hole to support a cantilever brake cable and housing. I'm switching to a brake hanger that fits around the threaded fork. However, the one I have available (removed from another bike) has a skirt around it that blocks access to the wrench flats on the threaded race. What does one do about this? Should I add a bunch of spacers under it until I can get at the wrench flats? Buy a different one that's like a flat washer? The bike from which this one was removed had the same issue; there was a washer under it, but it didn't provide enough height to get a Park headset wrench under it.

You just need to make it work for you.
You might replace the hanger with one that doesn't overlap the cup below.
Or, set it up with the spacer below, or an extra spacer if the fork is long enough.
Or, since it's keyed, hold the hanger steady while tightening the lockout.
There's no RIGHT or BEST way, just whatever works based on the particulars.

this is an easy problem to solve. If you get on eboy and search for "problem solvers brake hanger" you will find no end of possibilities.
on my white Raleigh Pro Mark 1 this is one of the few deviations from original configuration - mostly because the pot metal brake hanger was so flexy as to make the brakes almost dangerous to use.
the item pictured is under 10 bucks and very solid, with full access to the headset top cup

another solution is a hanger attached to your fork;
