Oddly enough, the top tube doesn't show the slightest bit of damage. I wouldn't dare put a Park HTS-1 to this frame.

Mind you, not only is the downtube bent, the headtube is buckled just below the upper headlug too. Spinning the fork makes it painfully apparent that the lug faces aren't parallel.

I'll still have fixed, and do an expert repaint and fresh decals. I've got trade bait........

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Well, I'm doomed. No sooner than I swear that I'm going easy on this hobby, a wrecked '72 Carlton Pro with fastback seatstays waltzes itself into my life:
That said, I'd appreciate your honest opinions on this one (soon as I have photos up) - is it worth it to fix this one? I have a downtube and headtube ready, a die-grinder on hand to remove the old tubing out of the BB and the upper headlug (not to mention cleaning out the lower headlug for lack of finding another long-point lug). I'm certain Mike Terraferma wouldn't mind putting the mix back together for me.
In short, cost isn't as much the issue as is the effort.
That said, I love my '78 Raleigh Pro Mk.V, and I've added it to the list of bikes that I refuse to get rid of. I've often considered adding a Mk.II/III/IV Pro to that roster, of which this Carlton would serve equally - but am I misguided in thinking that the earlier Pro will ride similar to the later Mk.V? Anyone here have experience on both?

Calculate how much it would cost to find the same frame in intact and sound condition vs having to do an extensive rebuild and re-paint of the frame you have and then decide of the Carlton you have is a piece of wall art.
I have often said that you can repair almost any steel frame if you have the money, skills, and time but if it is not an exceptionally rare bicycle the expense may not warrant this amount of work.
I have the skills and time to do work like this but I would probably walk away from this one since the frame has been compromised in so many places.

If it is the headtube, steerer, downtube, and rear stays that all need work one is essentially looking at rebuilding the front end and the damage at the rear seat stays might be an indicator of how badly the frame is bent... and then there is the fork.
It is a wee bit of work.

Effort is the whole point of an immersive and technically challenging hobby. It's supposed to take time and effort. It's supposed to be fun. And saving something of value from the trash heap of history is a pretty healthy pursuit in my opinion.

How much differently do you think this frame would ride than the '73 Paramount you are selling to me? Is the wheel base significantly different? Both 531, both lugged, both top of the line racing frames from the same era, etc. Geometry's will be pretty similar. The original paint will be lost. It just seems like more of the same even, if it is repaired.

Not everyone has the resources this frame needs - but you currently do, and it's a worthy subject.
Maybe replace the tubes and pass it on to someone who's willing to invest in paint? Minimal cost outlay on your end, and slight chance of a small profit?
If it were closer to my size I'd find a way to make it happen.

I'd have a really hard time resisting this one. I love that cluster treatment, and it's unusual in that it's an actual Carlton.
I've had a soft spot for Carltons for a few weeks now...
