Selling Campy for Sram Red/Force
Should I make the leap?? (no shimano here)
I have campy 10-spd, mostly a mix of record and chorus...Its getting expensive to replace the cassettes etc. Who else has done this? Regrets?

What do you consider expensive for the cassettes ? I use centaurs

I did it about 3 years ago with no issues. It's nice to have the rebuild-able option but for functionality, I've not had any problems.

The only cassettes now made for Campy 10 are the lower level Centaur/Veloce and they are cheap, if bought from the UK. Any 10 speed chain will work, but Veloce chains are only about $27 and last longer than any other.

its getting expensive to replace cassettes and you want to but a new red/force group, which means you need new wheels too??
if you want to buy a new groupset, just admit it, but dont use the ridiculous excuse that cassettes are expensive.
here are mirage cassettes for $27. it will probably last for over 5k miles. think buying a sram red group is going so save you money??

seriously, is there anything wrong with your setup? with any group you'll have to keep buying things. chainrings, cassettes, whatever. sram pg1070 and og1070 cassettes are over 70 usd and nearly 100 from some places (retail pricing). I can't see how you'll save money going sram. Much as I love my setup, and funnel that kool aid like a spring breaking 19 year old in mexico... I just don't see the point unless you just feel like spending money. If that's the case... dude, just do it.

i also use a centaur cassette and veloce chain with my record shifters/cranks (miche makes cheap cassettes too)

All of this said, I have used Campy since 1994 and have never looked back. I can't think of reasons to change to Red if you bike is already set up for Campy.

Easy there Skippy. I know that you can upgrade an 8 speed ergo lever to 9 by replacing the little ratchet mechanism in side. I don't think that this is possible with 9 to 10, or 10 to 11. Dave from Colorado will know for sure.

you just have swap ALL the 10spd internals to the 8spd body minus the rear "anti jamb" coil spring. they shift just as good as 10spd but will jamb like 8spd if you push both levers at once.
edit: the 10spd upgrade is done by using the 10spd internals+ a custom made 10>11 ratchet that is manufactured by a 3rd party (brandford bike has used them with success in 10spd levers with a 10spd RD)

Yeah.. still mulling over it. I know its not an "upgrade" in any sense but rather am thinking long term... I just dont see how Campy 10spd would remain relatively "cheap" to replace parts when you can find SRAM used for sick prices these days. I'm tempted to keep just the campy shifters & FD and try everything else SRAM. It apparently works with SRAM RDs. (dont take my word for it, google it up).

If that third party indexing disc comes from the people who posted the youtube video when 11 speed first came out, I'd avoid that. The shifting sounded horrible - nothing like a Campy 11 speed drivetrain should.
Campy has changed what they will sell as shifter repair parts. They quit selling many individual parts for the 2009+ ultrashift ergo levers, so you can't easily and cheaply change them to 11 speed. I've converted 2009 model Centaur 10 ergo levers to 11 speed, but only because I had a wreck-damaged 11 speed shifter to supply the two parts needed.

That won't work well at all and I've explained why several times. Campy 10 shifters pull 2.5mm of cable five times, 3mm twice and 3.5mm twice. That is much different than the cable pull required by a SRAM 10 RD. It requires a uniform cable pull of 3mm for every shift. After the first five shifts, the RD needs 15mm of cable pull, but the Campy lever only provides 12.5mm. It would be off by nearly a whole cog's worth of cable pull.
Campy prices are at a many-year low right now, from UK sources. Stock up now.

Im anticipating a new Giant (replaced under warranty, cracked at the headtube!); and was hoping to be able to sell my campy stuff in order to be able to afford TWO sets to outfit two bikes (current steed with Rival and the incoming Giant with Force). Probably am OVERTHINKING this... as usual.

You can make some upgrades to shifters, but 8 speed parts are hard to find and you cannot upgrade just any shifter to 11 speed - only the 2009+ ultrashift models.

thanks for the insight. i was in contact with several people about the 3rd party solution to go from 10 to 11 and they were very happy with it but it still scared me.
10spd availability was what eventually made me upgrade the 8spd levers to 10 and not 11. i got all of the parts (new) to rebuild the right lever and new hoods for about $200 so for $300 i ended up with a set of record titanium levers that look new, shift 10spd perfect, and "fit" my bike better than any other off the shelf option.
