I've been liking the concept of the Giro Air Attack Shield helmet for several years now. I just saw this particular color on Amazon for only $100, so I pulled the trigger. So far I'm liking having the shield.

I also picked up a Park Tools truing stand. I used the fork of my previous bike when I built my previous set of wheels, and decided to do it right this time.

Hehe. If you look on the left edge of the makeshift workbench the truing stand is on, you can see an oak-faced cabinet I picked up, unfinished, from Home Depot for just over $100. I rubbed some stain and poly on it, and then hung it up in my garage yesterday. The first thing I put in the cabinet after it was up was a bunch of random bike stuff I had sitting around the garage, like extra tubes, parts, tools, etc. There's a lot more tools to police up and put away in the new cabinet. The cabinet was a pretty good deal, and I think I'll go pick up another one. My garage needs all the help it can get.

I've had my eye on the Air Attack Shield helmet for a long time now. It was just more than I wanted to pay. I don't know if Giro is discontinuing it or not, but I've seen them at prices as low as $134 recently, and nearly bought one at that price. When I saw this one color (and only this color) available for $100 I just did it. I'm liking the improved peripheral vision from not having sunglasses on. I also like that it will be a lot harder for me to get sweat on the shield than it was to get it dripping down my sunglasses while out riding hard. If the little aero boost saves me 10 seconds over a two hour ride then that's just a bonus (hehe). I picked up a clear lens for it as well, and used it on a night ride last night.

Shimano 105/5800 crankset. Seems so much more efficient than my 2012 FSA Gossamer. So much difference I think I was losing speed.

Brakes and wheelset is done. Only thing left is shifters, mechs and another chain to finally switch to 11spd.

Last week I purchased a replacement resistance unit for a leaky CycleOps Fluid 2. Cost was $109 shipped.

I've taken the old unit apart. The inner seal that surrounds the axle had gone bad.

My two grandsons are "all boy" meaning they are never still, rarely quiet, and love adventure. They live out from town in a mostly wooded area where most of their bicycling is on dirt. I live in a developed neighborhood with paved streets and copious sidewalks.

The $18.70 answered the "what do we do at Papa's house" question to their complete satisfaction.

I got the rest of my parts for my new wheel build.

Sapim CX-Sprint spokes for the front, Sapim Force spokes for the rear. A set of 36-hole White Industries CLD hubs, Sapim HM washers and black brass nipples. A pair of Light-bicycle carbon rims (28mm wide, 46mm deep).

Those are great hubs. I use T11's on both my road bikes.

Replaced the poorly "sealed" stock headset on my Jamis Renegade with a CF-40 with sealed cartridge bearings. And no, I'm not going to slam it.

Hmmmm...contemplating if I should pick up the matte black one. $115 is a good price. I already have 2 of these and I like it a lot.

The one thing that made me nervous about getting a dark color in this helmet is that I live in AZ, and when it gets hot out here that's going to bake your head a little. I was originally going to get the white/silver version of this, but it was more expensive. It may be that during the summer I won't use this helmet, though to be honest, during the summer it's hard to ride when it's 110 F out anyway. I've done it quite a few times, but it totally sucks.

So far I've done several rides with this helmet and I quite like having the visor.

The visor is actually the reason why I love this helmet. The total visibility is close to none compared to wearing sunglasses. I use it for summer as well but I really can't tell a difference how hot it is compared to my non-aero giro because I always wear a skull cap.

I wear a skullcap for winter rides when it gets chilly enough. The combo of this helmet with its somewhat reduced ventilation compared to normal helmets and the skullcap ought to be pretty nice. I'll be wearing that on my Christmas Eve midnight ride to kick off the Festive 500 on Strava. It's amazing how much easier it is to ride in the cold as long as the head stays warm.

I wear one too for winter (thermal skull cap) but the above one is for summer riding. You should give it a try.

One of the coolest gadgets I've found in a long time. Now I can mount a taillight on the seatpost without saddle bag blocking it's view. KB.

So, how do they compare? I looked them up after seeing this and I don't get it (yet). Do they have some secret sauce? It's hard to imagine someone making a business out of bike tubes unless they're just that much better than everyone else's bike tubes.

@birru 's photo reminded me of another recent purchase that arrived last week. I didn't like the stack (3x10mm + 1x5mm) of black FSA alloy spacers underneath the stem on my Lynskey, so I had Ti Cycles make me a single-piece 35mm titanium spacer. It's not straight walled, having a narrow hourglass shape to it that probably doesn't come out well in this photo.

This has to go down as probably the least real value I've ever received for money in any bike purchase I've ever made, but I wanted it for the look. I say least value not because it's not well made, because it's actually very well made. I say least value because there's zero functional advantage to it over the perfectly good, albeit ugly, solution that was already there. Now it kind of looks funny wedged in there between the black headset top bearing cover and the black stem. But hey, I could always spend even more money in the future to get a matching titanium stem that adds no practical benefit but looks cool, right?
