1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
1985/6Peugeot P10L, Carbolite 103 frame, Shimano FH-1050/1051 groupset, Mavic MA2 and Continental Gatorskins
1980 ALAN Super Record, mostly Campagnolo groupset, Mavic 500 hubs MA2rims and soon to be Open 4 CD rims
2012 Focus Cayo 3.0, Shimano 105 groupset, FSA, Prologo, DT Swiss

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
No

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Just back cycling after a 23 year break, so slow compared to then, but the enthusiasm is every bit as good as it was in the 80s/90s

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Started at the age of 7 but couldn't afford to buy a bike so usually borrowed a mates
Serious cycling in my early 30s then a career change caused me to give it up

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Slowly building up to longer rides, easily managing around 30 miles when I venture out without any effects.
Maybe I'm not pushing myself hard enough

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
4 or 5 times a week...mileage going up all the time

If you haven't already, perhaps you might indicate your age. It helps others to see that folks 50+ do great things.

Hello again 47P2, already found your intro post, glad that you came to the 50+ Forum. That stable you have is impressive, hope you get the chance to work them out more often as you return to cycling. There are several of us returning to cycling after a hiatus so we can relate to your feelings. Please post some pics, as you have in your Intor post, for us to enjoy and drool over. I'd love to see any pics of that beautiful Alan you put together from the bits you got at the rummage sale.

BTW, another 56Y.Y. (years young) rider here.

Bill

Just discovered this thread, so thought I'd say hi...

Please tell us your age.
53

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
'86 Fuji Palisade that's a tad too big for me, but I like it too much to part with it.
'91 Miyata Elevation 1000 MTB
'07 Specialized Globe City 6

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
No, should I?

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
Slowed down some, for sure... Don't have the strength I used to, so trying to make up for that by working on my endurance. And while I still like speed, I'm not as daring (stupid?) as I once was.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Got my first bike when I was about 6 or so, a Western Flyer "Stingray" type. Got my first 10 speed, a Sears Free Spirit in '71 or '72 for my birthday and rode it all through high school and college. Sold it when I moved to CA in '84 and didn't have a bike for about 5 years. Bought the Fuji from a friend who was moving in about 1990 because I really missed riding, and rode a few times a week, (including the occasional 30 mile rt commute to work). When the second kid was born, I guess the car seemed to be more of a necessity, and the bike sad downstairs for about 10 years. Started up again about 8 years ago.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Want to start touring, never done it before. For now it's a mix... Short trips around town for shopping, weekend commute to a volunteer gig that's about 10 miles round trip, and I try to at least once a week do a 30 or so mile excursion to somewhere I haven't been before. If I ever get a job again, I hope it will be one where I can commute by bike. This has actually become one of my higher priorities in my job search, which may have something to do with why I'm still looking!

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Almost daily a mile or two, but 3 to 4 times a week, I try to get in at least 10-15 miles. Annually, maybe 2000 miles... gonna try to work that up to 5 this year... Haven't driven the car in a month!

Ok so not quite answering all the questions but bear with me.
turning 54 this June
On my fifty birthday week I decided to ride 500 miles in 5 days. Somehow got fixated on the 5's. Did it all solo except one day when a friend joined me and ended up at about 540 miles. One of the best weeks of my life. Been doing it ever since that and last year organized it as a fundraiser for a cycling program with our local sports education foundation. Coming up this year on 6/5 in Bend Oregon. mbsef.org for details.
Bikes, Trek Madone 4.7, Redline conquest cross, Trek fuel ex9 Mt
Ride about 1500 miles road and 2-300 Mt a year mostly april -Nov.
Enjoy.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
I have a Schwinn 7 speed cruiser. I just started riding again after many years of not riding

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Just multivitamins.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
I'm fat -- of course, I've slowed down. I'm hoping that taking up cycling again will change that.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Biked a lot when I was a teenager. Just started again.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Very short rec rides. I've got a goal right now of being able to participate in "Bike to Work Day" on June 26th.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Too soon to tell on either.

I'm a musician as well as a legal secretary and just finished my master of arts in management and leadership. When I was married, I stopped doing much in the way of physical activity. I danced regularly from 30-45 and practiced aikido during the same time. When my knees gave out, I stopped doing much physical at all.

My Schwinn is new to me -- a present to myself from my tax refund. I haven't ridden in 20 years, but it seems to be coming back.

Hi Everyone. Happy to be a part of this great forum. Just recently turned 50 and returned to the saddle after 4 years off. Getting back into it and finding out that I'm not the same person 4+ years ago. Its a little harder and I'm a little slower.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

Rebuilt a 1999 Trek 2500 Aluminum road bike. Love it and much lighter than I am used to. Back in the day I rode a Columbus tubing SOMEC. I still have that old bike but its enjoying its retirement while I ride my rebuilt Trek 2500. I also have a 1993 Trek 8000. Rebuilt that one too. But I enjoy my road bike.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Nothing really. Omega 3 capsules and metamucil for now. Looking into supplements currently.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

Slowed down ALOT! I used to be able to push a big 54/39 chainring. Now looking into installing a compact crankset. SLOW is an understatement...for now.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Started cycling back in 1994 and stayed consistent thru the years. Stopped 4 years ago due to a bad marriage.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Did a few of centuries. mostly short rides for now to get back into it

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

Right now I get on the bike 3-4 times a week. Haven't reached the annual mileage point yet.

If you haven't already, perhaps you might indicate your age. It helps others to see that folks 50+ do great things.

50 years old as of March 2013 and loving it.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

'73 Motobecane Grand Jubliee, '81 Centurion Super LeMans, '03 Colnago Dream Lux, '10 Gary Fisher Wahoo MTB. I so want a Tri bike, full suspension MTB, Cross bike.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Permanately on Nexium (or equivalent... like omeprazole) for Barrett's Syndrome (GERD).

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

None.....but I weigh more, still trying to reconcile the physics as I'm now riding at my all up young "touring" weight (me+bike+gear = 215-220 at age 21.....now me + bike ='s 215) I'd be blistering fast if I just dropped 40...LOL!

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?

Since 1973 but with a decades long layoff in my 40's.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Everything. Rode the Seattle to Portland last year (2 day). Lots of 15-50 mile riding. Not nearly the touring as when young (rode across North American continent at age 21). I'd love to tour again but....takes time and partner (wife doesn't ride as much as I).

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

3 days a week and about 2500 miles a year. A lot more in summer, a lot less in winter.

A buddy and I are forming a local bike club to get more people into cycling, advocate for trail and road improvements.

Hey Jseis, just an idea for you and your less riding wife to tour. I too, did a cross-country in my 20's. Then had a chance to do it again at 51, but husband not that much of a rider (COPD, lung lymphoma, hip & double knee replacements). Bought him a Trek FX+ electric assist bike. You still have to pedal but the electric assist helps with mountain days. As long as you conserve battery and don't ride high mileage days, this will get your wife across. The additional plus is since bike needs to be plugged in every nite, motels not camping :-) Our TransAm averaged 43 miles daily and we didn't camp a single nite. I kept a journal with contact info & price for all accomodations so others could use it as a template. It's actually the bomb once you're older and can afford it to do a credit card cross-country, eating in restaurants and staying in motels!

Yumadons,

Hey thanks. Great Idea. I think the SO is shy of the highway traffic issue. She knows where I ride (SR 101) and the issues I deal with including RV's, log trucks, punk kids, sleepy old folks, texters, etc. I'm trying to figure how get her on the road...no,luck,yet. Trails ok though.

Hi from Annandale, VA

My name is Rich Gibson. I've posted a longer version of my background in the Introduction forum. Since I'm a geezer I thought I'd drop by.

Please tell us your age. 71

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?
Looking for a hybrid

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Lots. I don't use glucosamin/condroitin, it altered my liver numbers. Instead I was introduced to Voltarin gel. It is like magic for joint inflammation.
- CoQ10 (200mmg /day)
- Garlinase
- B3 (Niacin slow release) 500 mg for triglycerides increase HDL
- Metamucil for fiber
- Alpha lipopic acid
- Vitacost Homocysteine formule (Dr.'s suggestion)
- Carlson Diabetes multivitamin (Dr.'s suggestion)
- Vitamin D3 4000 I.U.
- Quercetin & Bromelain for chronic upper respiratory inflammation..works!

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
My reactions are still quick, I just find it difficult to get up off my knees when I"m working down low.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life.
Various Life Fitness cycles (upright bike, recumbent, elliptic...25 years)

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
Recreational-fitness...once I buy one!

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Seven days a week 580 calories...five miles on elliptic.

I'm looking at one of four brand hybrids: Trek, Cannondale, Giant, Specialized

Hi Rich, hope the search for the new bike goes well for you. Pictures and a first ride report are a hard and fast requirement here in the 50+. Only advice I'll give you is to find a good Local Bike Store that you can work with and that will listen to what you want to do and your needs.

Bill

If you mind my asking, you needn't answer. In what way, perhaps elevated ALT/AST? And how would you know glucosamin and condroitin were the culprits? (AFAIK and FWIW, as I understand it they are meant for joint maintenance or growth but not particularly as an anti-inflammatory.)

This was a number of years ago. The doctor took three blood tests, each 90 days apart. I eliminated all of my nutritional supplements except the G&C (which I missed). After stopping the G&C that it went down and has stayed at normal levels. My understanding from numerous television commercials is that G&C is for knee pain. In any case I use Voltaren with excellent success. Since it contains aspirin in solution it only adds a miniscule level of the nsaid into the blood stream (1.5% of an aspirin). It's expensive ($17 for a 50 gram tube) but we travel to Europe on our vacation in May and it costs half of that or less from any pharmacy so I buy it there.

50.
1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

(a) A little known Hybrid called Montra Jazz A fitted with 700x35mm tires ( to follow my young group over not so well paved roads) &
(b) A Trek 1.5C (2013) Road-bike.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?

Nothing special. Though I am on medication post a Bypass operation in Feb this year

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?

My inclination to physical effort (exercise ) waned till just before my bypass - most likely symptomatic. But now the only thing that is 'slow' is recovery from some aches post exercise.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
I cycled till College and have taken it up again in April this year.

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.

Short and Long rides. For me just now, a long ride is 30miles.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?

4-5 times a week and definitely every Saturday and Sunday being Group Ride days. I average about a 70-80miles a week so far.

This group impresses me very much especially the volumes of cycling put in at very respectable ages. I derive great encouragement.

Hi, been lurking around this forum for a while, thought about 50+ when I turned 50 last December but stuff got in the way. I’m a grubby ol’ hot rodder from Auckland, New Zealand.

1. What type of bikes do 50+ folks ride?

2011 Scott CR1 Pro with either Fulcrum Racing 1 or Reynolds Assault clinchers, 3T stem, Fizik Arione CX, swapped compact crank to standard.
2008 (I think) Specialized Stump Jumper Pro, pretty well stock apart from carbon S Works bar, Rocket Rons.

2. Do you take any special supplements/vitamins/minerals as you have grown older?
Fish oil for creaky knees, a multivitamin each day.

3. How much do you feel you have "slowed down" if any?
The opposite really. As a relative newbie my riding is improving but I’m sure it won’t be too long before the tables are turned.

4. How long have you been biking? New, around a while, biked all your life?
Three years. After a life of total inactivity decided to join a gym for weight loss. Then I biked to the gym, and enjoyed the biking more. Struggled to do 5km in 2010, dropped 24kgs in approx a year, on my 50th in 2012 did a 640km (400 mile) enduro

5. What type of biking do you do? Long rides, touring, short rec rides.
I like to mix it up. Shorter fast (relatively speaking) road rides during the week, mountain biking on forest tracks once or twice a week, and a longer ride, usually 100km-plus, in the weekends with my cycle club or solo. This year shifted my focus from endurance to try and go faster over shorter distances. Our MTB rides are fun, social with mates, I have no skills and crash regularly; road riding tends to be a bit more hard out, and mostly solo.

6. How often do you bike? Your approximate annual mileage?
Usually four times a week, been known to do six. Last year did 9500kms, 1500 of those on my MTB.
