I'm trying really hard not to be a roadie dick.
It's hard, it really is. By nature, roadies are needlessly competitive, obsessed with what everyone else is riding and wearing, and quick to yell at and one-up any Fred they come in contact with.
So the other day I was on a ride that included a stop at the top of a climb overlooking the ocean. There are 4 routes you can take to reach the top, and none of them are easy. As I'm cooling down and enjoying the view, a roadie rolls up next to me and comes to a stop. He appears to be in his late 50's, somewhat burly, but muscular, as if he lifted weights. Riding a triple crank aluminum bike, wearing a helmet mirror and reflector vest, breathing heavily and lower jaw shaking, without my prompting he says, "I gave up cycling for years and picked it back up 6 weeks ago. The first time I went up (name of one of the routes) a month ago it took me an hour. This time it took me just 40 minutes." I nearly told him, but didn't say that it only takes me 25 minutes on a slow day.
Then he asked me what kind of bike I was riding cuz he'd never heard of the company (Blue Competition) before. I tell him it's a company out of Atlanta. He asks what it was made of. Carbon I tell him. After maybe a minute of silence he rolls off, saying "Take care." "Yeah, you too." So many things I could have said, but I held my tongue. He seemed so excited about his progress, and I while I was happy for him, I was mostly happy that my own time was way better.
Today it only took me 22 minutes.

I'm starting to think you don't really have coddling tendencies.

I'm glad you didn't say anything to him.

I'm usually pretty encouraging at the top of Mt Baldy to people. Even if it took them 3 hours it's still a feat that most people will never endure. You gotta give the guy props, he coulda just stayed home to watch men play with balls on ESPN.

Yeah best not to say anything to him at all. If it had been me and you would have made some arrogant comment I would have gladly thrown your precious carbon over the rail into the ocean and been like "D**n you think for all that money the dang thing would float."

At least your venting your competitive roadie dickishness here instead of on the road.
