Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

training on a different sized bike

hey everyone,

right now im riding a 54cm tarmac pro and i've been using it for races (cat 3)

as of now its my only bike (i pour all my money into it). i was wondering if it would hurt me or be more beneficial to train using my dads old REI nivaro (i think thats whta its called). It's a 52cm. if i raise the seat so it fits me better would this be a good idea? or am i better off training on what i ride in races?

thanks

So you're saying that your bike is too nice for training? Just train on the darn thing already. It's fun and it's nice to be on a nice machine while climbing.

However, it really doesn't matter. My training bike and my race bike have completely different geometries and I still train on the training bike and race on the race bike.

It depends....

My goal is top performance in race situations, for that reason I find it very important to train and race on the exact same geometry....which generally means the same bike. I only change out wheels to race, and even they aren't much different, just lighter aluminum wheels with less spokes. When you change geometries, you are using different muscles and experiencing stress in different ways. I got a wobble-naught bike fit and immediately noticed a change in leg muscles used from the changes to my position..basically moving the saddle up and back.

If you dont mind matey how tall are you and what is your inseam? Just curious since I ride a 52cm Tarmac Comp (modified with full ultegra + other mods etc etc)....Since the Tarmac has a race type geometry,..i think it wouldn't hurt as long as your dad's Nivaro is also of a race type geometry......a longer stem perhaps?

You're better off training on exactly what you'll be riding in races. Save the Novara for rainy weather, commuting and grocery runs.
