Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Racing Bike History/Timeline

I thought it might be interesting for BFers to post their road bike histories here.

Mine is as follows:

1976: Gitane steel racing bike, Mavic

1978: Alan aluminum, Sun Tour

1985: Specialized Allez (red, like the movie American Flyers), Sun Tour

1989: Trek 2500 (lugged CF), Dura Ace indexed shifting/components, down-tube levers

1992: Spectrum Titanium (Merlin frame, Tom Kellogg finish), Dura Ace 8 speed STI

1996: Ibis Titanium Road (Dura Ace 8 speed, then upgraded to 9 speed, still riding the bike, upgraded to D.A. 7800 and all new components/wheels and refinished in 2006)

2005: Cannondale Six13, D.A. 7800

2009: Cervelo S2, D.A. 7900

Currently I ride the Cdale, the Cervelo, the Ibis. Ibis is now 13+ years old, I ride it a couple of days weekly, still feels brand new. That frame has a lot of miles on it.

2005: Specialized Allez, Tiagra

2006: Giant TCR C2, 105 (replaced with Force)

2008: Specialized Tarmac SL, Red

2009: Specialized Tarmac SL2, Red

The Allez has the least amount of miles and is now dead. The TCR has the most, as I rode it exclusively for my "big" season of 20,000 miles in 2007 as well as most of 2006. I guess probably 35,000 miles or so if I had to guess. My SL has I think about 14,000 and my SL2 is now nearing 5,000

Christ Pcad,

My memory isn't that good anymore.

Pre 1981- Home built "Huffy Special", stole parts from every curb bike I saw. Brazed on my own cable stops at the age of 10 or 11 (with dad's help). Trued up a rear and built a front from parts and steel rims. Got busted riding by the 'rents riding into the "city" 15 miles to get 'bits' out of the parts bins of the lbs. Sufficiently impressed owner of bike shop gave me weekend work in addition to lawn mowing and chicken egg revenue that would lead to next bike(s).

1982- Univega, don't remember the model

83 or 84- 300 Series Trek. Think it was a 360, but could be wrong. I remember it was a 300, because that's how may dollars it cost. Rode that bike into the ground.

There's was a Raleigh around this time. They had sponsored the Olympic team and were actually trying to put out some reasonably good bikes. Reynolds tubes and Sun Tour drive train. sold on to another school aged rider within the season.

A Super Mercian, year unkown, nuevo record and others.

1985- Having shattered most parts and now equipped with a pair of decent wheels I became the recipient of a Merckx Columbus SP hand me down from one of the other shop riders. My first real "pro" frame and what it felt like to ride one. Stiff took on a new meaning. Mostly Campy Record, but still friction shifting. If my storage unit in Atlanta has not been burgalrized, I still own this bike.
Mmmmmmm, "Rosebud."

Insert, drivers license, high school sports, university and ten years of mostly mountain biking in Wyoming.

1999-2000 Cannondale Caad4, Dura ace Cranks and pedals, the rest Ultegra. Still my current ride(and un-cracked, crossing fingers), although that will change once I'm re-employed.

I also had a Vitus Aluminum 979 in the late 80's for about a month. The noodliest bicycle I have ever ridden. Got rid of it within a few weeks. Terrible. Looked nice though.

Well my list certainly isn't as long as some of yours. But I'm not as old, either.

2001: Got a 1989 Cannondale R600 from my dad
2001: Cannondale R1000, 105
2005: Pinarello Prince, Record
2007: Fuji Team, 105
2009: Fuji Toyota Team, Rival

Still have all of them except the Pinarello.

Hmmm.

ca.1975-1978: Huffy 3 speed from which I threw an afternoon newspaper when I got home from school. It was (and will probably remain) the only bike I was ever paid to ride.

1976: Tried to build a bike around an old English road frame the Schwinn shop I hung out at gave me. Never could get it right but it was enough to convince me "10 speeds" was where it was at.

1977-1985: Money from the 3 speed bought me a Motobecane Nomade which I modified with better shifters and wheels. Won a few $ in informal "races" on a service road at the beach. Not real races at all but the likelihood of winning real $ ever again is small.

Got out of riding as high school and college football took over.

1985: Back into cycling and put together an unknown Reynolds frame with Shimano 600EX and Mavic rims.

1986: Move the stuff over to a then brand new and very funky Cannondale SR600. Still own that bike.

Stop cycling after 1991 and a motorcycle accident in '93 keeps me off the bike as well.

1999: Decide to get back into it and buy a Univega Modo Vincere from an online dealer. Also, start buying parts to build my "dreambike" from when I used to ride. A Basso frame with Campy Super Record.

ca.2003: Colnago Master with Record 8 speed

ca.2005: LeMond Maillot Jaune with Chorus 10

~3 months ago: Litespeed Ultimate (nos '02 frame) with Centaur 10

Somewhere in there I also got a 1978 Motobecane Gran Jubile (it was cheap and I was nostalgic)and tried a Cannondale TT frame (Caad7). Still have the Moto but found I couldn't modify a TT frame enough to be comfortable on (the M/C accident paralyzed my left arm) so the new C'dale is gone. The '86 is at the inlaw's in TX and gets ridden when we visit.

Not all of them are "race" bikes but most of them were (are). Back then people used to call 3 speeds "English Racers."

You will be. But will you still be riding your bicycle? That's what I ask myself when I run into this 82 year old local who rides his Litespeed racing bike on the local MUP every day.

1983 - Motobecane Jubilee Sport. Rode the crap out of it for 11k miles. I warped the chainrings, bent the crank arm, twisted the frame. After 8k miles, the Maillard Helicomatic rear hub disintegrated mid-corner on a descent, locking the rear wheel and bringing me to a panicked, skidding stop. I loved that bike. I keep an eye out for one in my size on eBay.

1985 - Vitus/Peugeot Carbon Fiber. This was the first carbon fiber bike available for mass consumption, and my misguided father bought one for me instead of the Olmo I'd always coveted. It rode terribly. The marketing copy said "you might give up 30 seconds on the descent, but you gain 3 minutes on the climb." It was actually the other way around. I learned to go downhill very quickly on that bike, though, a skill that still serves me well.

1990 - Bridgestone RB-1. Loved that bike. I raced many a collegiate criterium on it, and even did a few centuries. Got a job, got married and hung it up in my attic for some years before I got back into the sport, discovering that its aggressive, yoked out position was too much for my back which led to...

2003 - Lemond Buenos Ares. I was meh on this one. Loved the Ultegra group. The frame was okay, if ill-fitting. The fork was way too soft for a 190 pound rider who liked steep descents. So I took the parts and put them on a...

2005 - Tommasini Sintesi. I love this bike. They'll bury me with it. The geometry is ideal for me, and it's achingly beautiful the way only hand-crafted Italian steel bikes can be. It's lively and crisp handling, explosively fast, yet day-long comfortable. Sometimes I have to look down to see if it's still there. At 20 lbs I give away a few pounds to the latest high-zoot bikes, but I care not. This is the one.

2008 - 1983 John Howard. Very sweet, beautiful bicycle, hand made by Dave Moulton, gifted to me by my good friend Guy Gadois for my 40th complete with a mix of vintage Campy parts. It's gorgeous and rides sweet.

2008 - 1983 Univega Competizione. Custom painted by yours truly and built up as a winter single speed. Great handling bike, sturdy and stiff and fun. With the single speed, meaty tires and fenders, it doesn't look like much, but it's a sleeper. I can and do bring the heat on this bike on wet group rides.

Around 1983 I started riding my landlord's Schwinn 3 speed to try and get in better shape for off-road motorcycling. Switched to a KHS 10 speed with steel wheels after about a year. Gave it to my nephew and he pawned it for booze.
Got a Schwinn Tempo, 105 group, cheap wheels. Crashed it heavily in 1987 and sold it to a guy who never paid for it.
Picked up a Trek 660, put 15,000 miles on it and the frame broke in 1990. Got store credit on a Landshark, the most noodly thing I ever rode. Sold it to a friend after about 10K miles. He still has it.
Bought a Tesch S-22 in 1992, the stiffest bike I ever rode. Put thousands, maybe 20K, miles on it over the next 10 years while getting married, divorced, etc. Still have it, on loan to a friend.
Bought a Cannondale CAAD 5 Ultegra in 2002 to celebrate divorce, have about 22K miles on it.
Bought a Gunnar with Ultegra in 2006, looking for a softer ride, it worked. Have about 15K on it.
Had 2 touring bikes and 4 mtb's in there somewhere. Thinking about buying a Look.

fall'04 to fall'05 - First bike, C'dale R700, Caad7 frame, 105/ultegra mix. Died in a crash where I broke my collar bone. Now use the frame and an old brake caliper to true wheels.

winter'05 to fall '06 - C'dale Caad8 frame, 105/ultegra mix. Died in an endo crash that crumpled a bit of the downtube.

fall/winter '06 - borrowed C'dale Six/13 from a teammate while I waited for my replacement C'dale to arive. Won my first race on it! Did my first base training on it.

Winter '06 to now - C'dale Caad9 frame, full ultegra 10spd. First 58cm bike. Its a ****in trooper.

I've got WAY too many to list from 1986 until now. Suffice it to say, I've had premium rigs when it counted and budget rigs when it made sense. I've got one on the way that'll be with me for a while though and that makes me happy.
