Thompson Elite or Shimano Ultegra????

We're visiting my oldest son next week and I promised him I'd let him have one of my extra seat posts for a build project he's working on. When I checked to see what I have in the size and setback he needs, I find that I have two. A Thompson Elite and an Ultegra SP 6600. I'm really struggling with which one to give him. I have used them both and like them both. What would you keep and why? OR What would you give away and why?

I had a similar problem when I sold one of my bikes, I pulled the Ultegra off and it now resides on my Cannondale ST400. Both are nice seat posts.

Could always flip a coin.

Guess it's something I'll never have to worry about with an ISP frame.

They are both nice but look completely different. What is his build and what is on your horizon?

He's building a SS using a 1980 Specialized Allez Frame. My horizon is a 360 degree horizon.

Without knowing the other parts involved, the ultegra post would probably look best on the allez.

I am a fan of the Thompson elite and have them on two of my bikes. Oddly enough one of those is also like lubers, a c-dale 400st that resides in Wi.. My vote is to keep the elite. I like the ability to micro-manage the angle. Of course the same may be true of the Ultegra but I am a creature of habit and would still keep the elite.

As you are torn, why not ask him which he'd prefer? Seems it doesn't really matter to you but it may to him.

Isn't there a functional difference (Thompson is a zero offset seatpost, I believe, and the Ultegra is not)?

Well, I did call him and ask about his preference. His response, "Dad, I just want a seat post." This tells me that he's not really committed to this build as anything more than an experiment. So, I've pulled an old Bontrager off my beater bike, and I'll give him that one.

Thomson offers a setback post. I don't think the OP ever clarified.

+1

The Elite is very adjustable and stays-put. It's a fit-it and forget-it item.
