Ho Ho Ho Merry Bikemas - December 2016 100+ Mile Thread

I'll get us going this month...

This is going to be an ambitious goal considering my poor performance over the past three months, but I need 273.63 miles to reach my yearly goal, so my goal for December is 275 miles.

Dec 01 = 11.32 miles.

MTD = 11.32 miles of (at least) 275 miles.

Nothing yet. I've got a cold month for 3 goals. First at least 1 ride and I'll have ridden at least once every month this year. That should be easy.

Second, 105 mile goal for the month as that puts me at 2000 for the year, the most I've done.

Third is I'm at 97,383 feet of climbing for the year. 2617 feet to hit 100,000 feet. That should be an easy goal as well since 700-800 feet is pretty typical in 10 miles. 3-4 short rides should put me at the goal.

And to all....a good ride!

This year, I'm geared up to ride through winter rather than putting my bike on a trainer. Already ridden when the temp was as low as 28 degrees F. BRING IT ON OLD MAN WINTER!!!!!

It's been a while since I've shown my mug around here... I've really let things slide. I'm in for 100mi with a 150mi stretch goal.

12/1 - 10.6mi. First time crossing the Big River Crossing. Fear of heights giving me issues.

MTD 10.6/100+

This is not generally my method-- I don't lay down goals, because I know when I make them I either shoot low so I can make them for sure, or don't say anything so I won't disappoint myself by missing it. I had an unofficial goal for the year to shoot for 500,000 vertical feet, but I'm gonna fall well short of that-- Veloviewer has me on pace for ~460,000 for the year, and I've frankly no desire to tack on an additional 40,000 feet this month. As a matter of fact, if I can keep the entire month under 30,000ft total, I'd be pleased.

But oh yeah, the goal. I'm sitting at 10,784 for the year, meaning I have 28 days to shoot for 1,216 miles. It's a damn stretch, but it's early enough in the month that I can semi commit to it. So I consider this commitment in pencil. That's 43 miles a day if riding every single day-- which I won't be. I've got 23-25 riding days at full commitment (no slacking) meaning I need to average ~50 miles a day.

As I blew myself up in September/October, I'd like to not reproduce that, so this month will prove interesting.

Raced CX Saturday. Unfortunately crashed out when I got too smart for my talent. Drifted the rear wheel around a u-turn and unfortunately the rear got some traction half way through the corner and momentum took me to the ground on the outside of the curve and through the tape. Only ego injured as everyone rode right on by my sorry a$$ as I lay on the ground wrapped in race course tape.

Sunday's result was better. Took second and won some swag (new pair of gloves).

Added 15 miles to the monthly total.

Dropped 2 degrees down to 32 last night. Went out to try the new cycling cap and should have taken the full face cover with me along with I'm ok with my thinner gloves at 34 but need something more substantial at 32. 2 degrees really is different. Only did the same 4.4 miles from Monday since I was colder and headed home.

12/4 - 8.3 miles - 608 feet climb
12/5 - 4.4 miles - 260 feet climb
12/7 - 4.4 miles - 260 feet climb

MTD - 17.1 miles

YTD - 1911.9 miles - 98,491 feet

My goal is to spend an hour a day on the Spinmaster this month, so far I'm right on track. Looked at the extended forecast today and noticed our high for Christmas Day is 35 with sunny skies. Looks like I'll break out the balaclava, gloves and wool socks and ride a mile per degree the temperature is this Christmas :-)

I would have to do a metric century on Xmas day. Which wouldn't be entirely out of the question, I did 77 miles on Xmas Eve last year. There are some upsides to having very little in the way of weather.

Well if it was 62 degrees on Christmas Day, I would do it without question, but I'm not going to do a metric in near freezing temps There's a fine line between fun and torture. 35 miles, however, sounds doable to me right now. Pedal fast to stay warm and being above freezing & sunny I'm hopeful for no ice/snow on the roads.

Last CX race of the season on Saturday. Very rainy with soul sucking spongy wet grass. To ease my back pain from last weeks impact with the turf I used my full suspension mtb with huge and heavy mud tires. Got the best workout of the season yesterday. Finished low, as expected, but not DFL and was on the lead lap.

Added 6 painful miles to the monthly total.

On pace for 950 miles for the month, which will end the year at 11,800 miles, give or take. Did 45 fairly brisk miles on Sunday afternoon (with about 2,600ft of climbing) and had a hard time falling asleep that night-- and I know a warning sign when I see one. Doing my best to dial back intensity on 3/5 of my weekly rides.

Only 357 miles so far this month.

Just picking away little by little. Was still figuring out my clothing on Thursday. 22.6°. Fingers and toes were freezing. Last night I was toasty warm at 30°, little too warm actually. It was a short ride because I started late. Have to do some Christmas shopping tonight instead of ride, then we hit the really cold for a few days. Hope the month outlook comes true with 35-40 the rest of the year.

12/4 - 8.3 miles - 608 feet climb
12/5 - 4.4 miles - 260 feet climb
12/7 - 4.4 miles - 260 feet climb
12/8 - 4.0 miles - 234 feet climb
12/12 - 6.9 miles - 453 feet

MTD - 28.0 miles

YTD - 1922.8 miles - 99,178 feet
