Speed or Specs: Masi Vs. Trek?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brand or Specs: Masi Vs. Trek?

Title should read Brand or Specs!

My BF is looking to get his first road bike and leaning on me for guidance - so naturally I'm asking all of you. With a budget of $1K and local availability in mind, we've narrowed it down to two options:
  1. Trek Domane AL 2 Disc - 2022 - 8-sp / Shimano Claris
  2. Masi Vincere Sora - 9-sp / Shimano Sora
Is it stupid to go brand name over specs? I understand they make a big difference when you hit some of the more pricey stuff (Di2, hydraulic disc brakes, etc) but I'm not as familiar with Sora v. Claris. Would love to hear what people think and also any feedback people may have on Masi as a brand. I was amazed to even see a Domane available locally so am tempted to just tell him to go that route but could be persuaded that the extra speed and specs are worth otherwise. Thanks!

9 speed would be better than 8, but they are pretty equivalent. He should ride them both and buy the one that feels better.

Are either $1000? The Trek is listed at $1200 and Masi at $1100.

With those two specific bikes, I would not care much about brand name. Both have carbon forks, thru axles, the same disc brakes, machine built wheels with dead feeling tires, etc.
I have ridden and worked on modern Claris and Sora, both work just fine. They are basic and well established.

1- I would buy whichever feels best.
2- Assuming both feel the same, I would buy whichever I like the look of best.
3- If both look equally good, buy the Masi. Its better spec'd for less money.

IMO sora over claris, but as said before, have him ride both bikes and pick the one that fits best.

Or go with the better bike shop. I found the local Trek stores to be both super helpful and terribly arrogant. A smaller shop, especially one close by, could provide better service in the years ahead. I drive 20 minutes to my "local" bike shop and pass another one a mile from my house.
