Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I learned that Jeff Bezos left Amazon just about the time it hit the skids as a client focused business. Delivery times, here, began stretching out from the normal 2 weeks, to three, four, five weeks, until they have now stopped delivering at all to my town. During a part of that skid, they still had the gall to post the 4 day thing on their website. That eventually went away.

Are you saying this happened because Bezos left?

It seems that's what I'm saying. The timing was impeccable. On the other hand. I know as much about this particular synchronicity as i know about your practice studio, for example.

Good on you being smart; I've not been in the past and that's part of what I'm still dealing with.

Did surprisingly well today though.

Mrs BD is a retired Health Dept inspector. It takes a lot of prodding to get her into ANY pool, but she definitely will not go into a pool that kids have used. And she definitely will not get into a hot tub AT ALL (me neither).

There also are certain chain restaurants she will not eat at, one of which is a favorite of mine that I miss dearly, but I cannot reveal them publicly.

You never know what you're going to get when people say they haven't been riding much,, or some variation. Sometimes they're sandbagging, sometimes they mean it.

2 of the women on Saturday's ride made such claims. One of them was on the trip to Spain some friends did and she got the 'vid and only did one short ride over there. Said she had super high RHR and was using our ride as a test while on her comeback. She did take it easy and even rode part of the first climb with me. When it got a little steeper she took off, partly to get away from the chatterbox who was sitting on her wheel. She is one of the best climbers currently riding in our rides and it was obvious she was just sitting in for most of the ride. She was happy with how she felt at the end and seems to be over the sickness.

The other is a tiny woman who has been off the bike at times but it never seems to make any difference. Saturday morning she told me this time it had been a long time and she wasn't sure how she would handle the distance. Of course she was at the front all day, smiling and happy and bubbly as ever. Near the end when she pulled off to go home she thanked everyone for the ride, and said what a great time she had.

My friend was saying from the start that he didn't have good legs and felt weak. He turned off at the start of the first climb and rode by himself for a while before going home. He told me later on the phone that he might be sick. Hope not.

I have found that some of the competitive people, usually men, will not come to a fast ride if they are not at the top of their game. If they have an injury, an illness, or other blow to their training, they will ride and train alone until they feel they are ready to hammer a long ride again. I always thought that was kind of a crappy thing to do because most of us would come out no matter what. On the other hand, if there was someone who always out-climbed me and they were having a bad day I would feel guilty if I dropped them, especially if I liked them.

With the size of current F1 cars, and the layout of the course, Monaco is generally a pretty boring race. I thought the rain made it pretty exciting for the last 20+ laps. I think Logan managed to get passed 3 times in 1 lap. Monaco does seem to have run-out roads dialed in pretty well. If not for that, it would have been mayhem.

I was disappointed the Coca-Cola 600 was postponed to today. While F1 is by far and away the most watched racing circuit, even my wife knows Memorial Day Sunday is a 3-fer.

Indy was amazing. I’m still not sure how that wheel didn’t land in the stands, but I’m also glad everyone was safe.

I believe the F1 engines redline around 8000 rpm? Watching the Indy 500, I was amazed that they run at 11,000 plus for 200 laps!

It really has turned into a procession over the last 15-20 years but there have been some exciting wins in that time too. I still love Ricciardo’s win a few years back.

Nothing beats Senna’s win (1991?) when he lost 1st and 2nd gear. He’s easily the best driver I’ve ever seen.

Finally made it home. Officially physically and mentally exhausted. It’s all good though, now I get to relieve the wife.

I believe (stand to be corrected) that F1 motors currently go up to 15,000rpm (FIA-imposed limit), but can go much higher.

Well yes the outcome was predictable, but the manner of getting there was not. Quite a bit of tension, and better than most Monaco races.

It used to be 18000 a while ago, and has come down. 15000 now, yes, and was 20000 before the 18k limit.

This talk of high revving engines reminds me of my coworker. He bought a TR6 from a neighbor who'd had it for years ('going to get around to restoring it'), and he was really happy with it.

Then he picked up a Honda S2000, and is looking to unload the Triumph.

I'm amazed that a Top Fuel engine will run @7900 rpm for 4 seconds and go 1000 feet.

So you'll run it 4 to 5 months per year. Here they run year round so more equipment wear.
