Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Absolutely not....already decided my next bike is a Marvel with Campy Chorus only because I'm set on the chorus group and can't afford the Prince frame! Get it and let me know how happy you are!?

NZLcyclist,

Why would Campy be better? Have I just opened a can of worms?

Then again, there *are* Pinarellos with DA out there, and their owners are perfectly happy. I'm one of them. I guess this makes me a happy sinner!

Do what the Italians do, call it "Durache" (Dura ace in Italian ), it sounds better with "Pinarello"

Pinarello + Durache..

If you are going to build a cost-is-no-object kind of bicycle with a Prince frame, then why not go Campy? Whether or not it works any better, it will look a heck of a lot cooler on that frame.

Personally I would go for a custom-made steel frame before I spent that kind of money on a production frame. It may not be as light but still ranks pretty high for cool factor--it’s kind of like having a suit custom made for you rather than buying one off the rack, even if the off-the-rack suit is a really nice Italian suit.

Don't listen to these can't put Dura-Ace on Italian people!!! They will not be riding with you. If you prefer Shimano to Campy put Shimano on the bike, vice versa, put Campy on the bike. The Pinarello Prince is a fantastic frame and should be built to fit you best.

When I was in Italy this year it surprised me to learn that many Italian riders prefer Shimano, and even Cannondale frames. They charge a premium for such.
Buy what you like, what looks good, what works best, all in your opinion because you are the one riding it, not us. You will always find someone that will disagree with your decision.
I ride a 1983 Pinarello with SR and love it.
You'll do the same.

with everything going the way of carbon these days can somebody help me understand the rationale for spending that kind of money for the Pinarello Prince, a non-carbon frame?

with a carbon Fiber fork, a carbon Fiber Seat stay, and a carbon Fiber seat post, who need another carbon on a bike, this one will answer your question..

apologies, i should have been more clear and added the world "monocoque" to the question i posed.

i'm guessing that the reason epensive, metal bikes are still made by some of the premium brands is so that they can claim that they actually still manufacturer the frame vs. outsourcing everything to an aerospace/weapons manufacturer.

i'm not opposed to outsourcing. i mean, by all means Colnago, etc. all if there is someone else out there than can do carbon better than you then by all means you better take advantage of that supplier.

but obviously outsourcing just doesn't quite have the same marketing cachet as that image of Italian or French artisans hand assembling your bike. hence the reason the Pinarello Prince and other like bikes is still made and sold at such a high price.

One man's opinion, but I REALLY like my Time VX Carbon as well as my Trek OCLV. That said, I absolutely LOVE my De Rosa Dual & my Pinarello Prince. I'm sure others will disagree, but after riding basically all the frame materials out there, for me nothing beats a high-end Aluminum frame with Carbon Rear and Carbon Fork....

That's interesting to hear that. I have an alumninum frame (Bianchi EV2) with a Carbon fork, but no carbon rear or carbon seat post. I"ve actually never ridden a 100% carbon bike before but based on how they're all the rage these days I thought they must be clearly superior to any Aluminum/Magnesium & Carbon combo job.

Do you think you are in the minority with your opinion, and if so by how much?
