47# on a Kuat Sherpa 2 rack?

My new bike without battery weighs 47lbs. Kuat Sherpa is rated for 40lbs. Does anyone have experience with using that rack with a bike over 40#? Thanks in advance. Andy

I would not use a rack rated for 40 pounds per bike for a bike over 40 pounds. The rack is less of a bicycle carrying device and more of a safety device and if it fails on the road it can be quite dangerous. There are plenty of racks that can handle heavier e-bikes

I would play it safe and consider if you want a Küat maybe the new Piston Pro X (it is just a cool rack, super expensive but I saw it and was super excited) or the NV 2.0 (more reasonably priced) or Thule EasyFold XT or another rack that has the capacity.

Be safe and be smart get a proper rack to handle the weight of the bike.

Contact Kuat with details and see what they say. They probably have a safety factor built into that limit.

If you already have the rack, I would consider that it's rated for two bikes of 40 pounds each. One bike close to the rear trunk should be fine IMO (remember physics class). Also, remove the seat and post to get a little closer to the desired weight.

I have one. It will be fine, especially if you have a 2" receiver. Keep the bike on the rack closest to the car, and if you are really worried, leave the other slot empty (which I did on a recent 1000 mile drive -- it was more an excuse to keep my bike in the car).

I bought a Thule ramp to make loading the bike easier. (There is no "official" ramp for the Kuat Sherpa 2.0). It works out of the box, but I made a slight modification (drilled a hole to put a bolt/pin through it while loading/unloading, to keep it in place).

My Kuat Sherpa 2.0 has been rear-ended twice. It is actually quite robust.

Rack question resolved

Thanks to each of you for replying. I’m not one to over the posted weight limits. I tried the new Thule rack but returned it. My choice was the 1Up rack that can add a 2nd or more racks, has a roll on & roll off ramp and can easily handle the weight. 2 months in t with a few highway trips and I am very happy with it so far. Again, thanks for the responses. Regards from Florida, Andy

I bought this rack last year for my road and MTB bikes. Loved it for my road bikes but turns out this rack isn't really made for modern MTB's as it cannot accommodate longer wheelbase than 47" (most MTB's are now +48" due to slacker head angles. So not sure if your ebike is a e-MTB but if it is, you may want to look into other options.

Eventually had to sell it (and got a Saris version of the 1up when they were blowing them out)
