Bottecchia project bike
Earlier this month I was gifted a '72 Bottecchia Professional bike that a friend of mine has had for years collecting rust in his basement. He bought it in the 80's from the original owner, and proceeded to paint it this very '80's era purple! It came with two sets of Campy wheels - the originals w Fiamme rims and sew-ups (as seen in the picture below) and another set with clincher rims. As you can see it has a lot of surface rust but things still seem to work after a fashion. I'll see what I can do with it. I am in the process of going through it, freeing things up, and sanding away the purple. There is the original blue paint underneath, and underneath tht (I was surprised to see) the whole frame appears to have been originally chromes! I will post pics showing my progress. Any info on this model as well as renovation hints highly appreciated.

In this photo you can see the original paint showing where I have begun to sand away the dreaded purple. Also you can see how nicely the chrome and alloy are cleaning up. These wheels are not the original Campy wheels (they were from from a 'lesser bike') but have clincher rims as well as ancient tires which still hold air!

Glad you are resurrecting it and encourage you get it up and running forth with so you can take it for a ride to spur you on.
Here's mine after a basic cleanup and detail, also a repaint close to original color, needs decals but is a bit rough to warrant them.

Great thing is that you have an open canvas.
That will be a nice one to reimagine!

I only cleaned it up, cleaner polish/wax and elbow grease. It was painted long ago, not sure of the color but believe it is very close to the similar factory color. It had some braze ons added including unusual water bottle studs and the HB deleted, I have a replacement and will probably get some decals.

My 1972 Professional, it's made a few appearances in the forum. You can get the decals at cyclomondo. Gotta have the checkerboards.

thanks for the encouragement, merziac. It is inspiring to see what you’ve done with yours. It’s beautiful, even w/out decals! What color is that paint? Oh, and it looks like you have a more reasonably sized inner chain ring. Did you switch out the original brakes for something newer?
Chainrings are 53/42 so pretty standard fair with big being 1t bigger than usual which I like but can't really use except on the big downhills, got nuthin for the uphills, ever.

@markmdavis
#12 posts in and I just realized the SP was falling out in the first pic for being way too far up, lucky it went back in as it did.
I would encourage you to take a very hard look in harsh bright light at the entire seatlug area for trouble, very scary stuff.

Merziac, I noticed that too. The previous owner was 6'1" and apparently had the seat stem adjusted WAY up to the very last few millimeters. I was able to get the stem all the way down but not without a lot of effort. It does seem like the seat post (tube? ) was compromised. As I am 5'8' I will be keeping most of the stem buried so do not think I need to worry. Still, something to keep an eye on. Thanks.
