Bought: mid-80s Norco Avanti SL
So as I've stated in a few threads, C&V, in atlantic canada, is rare. Most of the stuff in classifieds is department store crap, and if a Peugeot or Nishiki or something comes along it's usually priced for real worth and then some, even if it isn't rideable.
Well this got posted to Kijiji last night as per my thread inquiring about it. I got a hold of the guy last night and agreed to meet him this evening. He said there was "High end parts" on it and they were "shimano." But he didn't know the name of the bike or which parts exactly he had, though he claimed to have worked on bikes before and through around the Motobecane name a lot.
the response to my thread wasn't a lot but it appeared it would be high tensile steel crap, or a decent frame. Me and my uncle who is in town visiting, drove the half hour to see the bike. It was not hi-ten steel. It wasn't the highest end bike in the day, but I have to say I think I did pretty damn well for my region, for $40.
Frame and fork are both Tripple Butted Ishiwata Cromo
Derailleurs and Shifters are Suntour (no model names on the derailleurs... info?)
Crankset is a Sugino No. 6
Headset in Tange TG235 (?)
Stem and Bars are WinPista
brakes and levers are Dia Compe
27 1/4in wheels on Suzue hubs (same make hub on my Colnago Sport, but different model)
not sure what the BB is yet.
best part is it's in great condition! few minor scrapes to the paint and some rust spotting on the chrome parts but nothing serious. I should be able to put new cables and housing on this, tune up the brakes and derailleurs and ride! But I am going to check the chain for stretch and probably repack BB, Headset, and wheels. This should be an easy restore for me just need to get a few tools to do the job which I need anyway, I've been bumming time off local shops and I think I've out stayed my welcome. lol
So what do you guys think?! I really like the lug lining.

I think for $40 you did great!
I like how those high end Shimano components turned out to be Sugino, Suzue, and Suntour.
Make sure to replace that godawful seatpost bolt with something more appropriate. You don't want to impale your leg on that thing.

I am originally from Halifax (and almost certainly moving back in the fall) but I am currently living in small town Ontario. It's amazing how expensive second hand bicycles can be in Halifax, so you scored a pretty awesome find.

Also: since I don't have 50 posts I can't respond to your PM - I am not being rude.
After looking at what's on kijiji in Halifax I am seriously considering buying bikes here for cheap and moving them with me and selling them when I get back to Halifax. Although that seems like a lot of effort.

Man, I had my Avanti SL with the same components (slightly modded) stolen in downtown Toronto (high-end U lock compromised, probably with a tubular lockpick).
One of my favourite (if not my favourite) vintage/classics to ride. I went all around Ontario with that thing.

The Avanti came out in 1982, as Norco's bottom of the line model. The SL followed a couple of years later and was the upscale, lightweight version. This model went to a contrasting head tube for 1987, so this sample should be circa 1984-1986. Depending on the exact year, it was either 2nd or 3rd from the bottom of the adult, lightweight line. The derailleurs appear to be SunTour Seven, with the rear being the GT version (should be stamped RD-2000 on back).
It's a great acquisition for $40 CDN. I'd appreciate the serial number for my database. TIA.

I must have got burned at $60 but I'm in the Valley, an hour outside of Halifax.
It's my sons college bike, had to mod it with straight bars and a rack. It's a decent frame that could be improved with nicer components but it's also fine as is. T-Mar, I'll get the serial number when I see it next.

I agree with the OP about the local market. Crap bikes are offered for top dollar yet no one wants to pay a fair price for good quality C&V.
Bikes are too often misunderstood.

FYI. I have a Norco Magnum ST tourer with that same headbadge that is dated 1985. I believe that was the only year it was used.

If you collect Norco Avanti SL Serial number, I have one from an bike I bought in Halifax in 1984. S/N SA629262. It has hung on my garage wall since 1992. So far zero rust, scratches, or dings - only collected Calgary dust

I wouldn't have thought 1984 based on the serial number. Photos of the bicycle would be appreciated.
