Hi,

Anyone have a recommendation for Trek pewter touchup paint? I would describe it as a metallic gray



I think this color was used on may of that era Trek bikes so I am hoping someone has a Testors or similar recommendation for me. If anyone knows the original Dupont Imron code please pass that along.

I was just about to post this same question for my 1981 Trek 613 of the same color. Did you ever find a match?

My guess is one of the "metallic" ones at the bottom of the Imron link. 44453 or 44447

Haha alot of them are pretty close. I really need to find a Trek that isn't Pewter though!

I mixed up a small batch of black spray enamel with some testors silver metallic and got something that is very close for small chips, totally wrong for larger areas. Did the batch in the top of the spray can lid and just fiddled till I got close.

No but I'm looking over 44401 in the posted link, "Pewter Gray Metallic", for a couple of small scratches on my '86 500. Thanks for this thread, btw. Saves me from the asking.

I had been thinking about hitting the hobby shop and seeing what I could find since the scratches are small. Testors is all I need to be playing with.

I think that is the right code too, but do you know where you would go to buy touch up paint in that color? My '81 613 I just acquired already has a pretty rough touch up job done by the previous owner so I basically have nothing to lose. I'll post my results on here if I can manage anything close to the original Trek pewter.

I'm probably not the guy to ask since the only painting I've done 40 years ago was commercial. I've never played with Imron and you'd better wear a respirator if you do any spraying. Dupont would probably be the source and an auto body shop might be your best adviser.

For my needs (2 very small scratches) I'm either going to the hobby shop for a little bottle of Testors or I might follow the advice of markk900 in post number 9.

albon101, not sure where you are located, but my understanding is that Imron is not allowed to be sold in California. I'm not even sure the general public can buy it. It's very toxic. I would advise that you use Testers or one of the other enamel hobby paints for touch up unless you are an experienced painter with the right type of paint mask.

I'm lucky that my local hardware store has a great hobby section with a wide variety of touch up paint options:

For my Trek 400 (Race Blue?) I had to mix Testors French Blue with a darker blue metallic to get a match. Some sites (vintage trek) claimed that the french blue was a perfect match, but not in my case. They may have varied hue over the years. Mine was an '85.

This is worth repeating: Imron contains Isocyanates and should not be used without taking all necessary safety precautions.

Thanks for the advice gaucho; I wish my hardware store was that well stocked! I don't plan on messing with the actual Imron paint, I was just acquiring if anyone knew of a place where you could take the number to have a similar paint mixed. I'm gonna call up co-motion and order up the '97 silver metallic color that they say matches imron 44401. I'll post the results.

I know it's been awhile, but did you ever find any kind of match for the Imron Pewter? I'm sure that there are lots of vintage Trek owners, myself included, that would love some resolution here. Either way, I'd like to re-open this thread. Is there an easy match for Imron 44401?

I’m wondering if any of the folks who attempted this could share what they used and the results?

I just acquired a 1984 Trek 500 in pewter. It has a nice long (now a bit rusty) scrape through the paint on the top tube from being locked up against things presumably, which I’d love to diminish the ugliness of.

I recently found this thread - https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...-manicure.html - and acquired the product referenced, for my '83 730. I've only done one small test; didn't even feather the edges as described. Definitely better than the ugly scratches, but not a dead-on match. Better prep might yield better results; just haven't sliced out the time to do so.
