You say that like there's a simpler way to get from the Pacific Ocean to the great lakes without a trailer.
Best I can do is sail to Acapulco, trailer overland to Vera Cruz, then into the Gulf of Mexico, up the eastern coast to the St Lawrence River, then through the Great Lakes to Toledo or Detroit?
Never trailering means a trip to Panama.

Neat! You can't fully grasp what can be dispensed in vending machines until you visit Japan. I was constantly both surprised and amused.

I don't recall if I've posted a shot of this memorial before or not...

It is located in the town known as Pond, MO (now incorporated into Wildwood, MO, I believe), along the old Route 66. As noted, it was put up by the St. Louis Cycle Club in 1923 to honor one of the club's members.



I've never seen another memorial like this, but perhaps someone else has?? It's a great gesture, and also a sign of a road that has been a favorite of cyclists for very close to a century, at least.

Options - from the Gulf, up the Mississippi River, then:
* up the Illinois River, up the Des Plains River, up the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, "up" the Chicago River into Lake Michigan and around the Great Lakes, or
* up the Wisconsin River to Portage WI, through the Portage Canal to the Fox River, down the Fox River into Green Bay, through Green Bay into Lake Michigan and around the Great Lakes.

Edit - I just noticed that's a Nissan Titan. Is that a 3/4-ton or 1-ton truck? Do any of the Japanese even make a truck rated to haul something like that? The rear suspension looks..... low.

There's a vending machine with innertubes and a few other "oh snap" items (maybe CO2 cartridges?) outside Machinery Row Cycles, alongside the "Capital CIty Path", sort of the "main drag" of the cycling infrastructure near downtown Madison.

OT, but... etched into the stainless steel front panel of such a... dispenser, men's room of the Mobil station off I-94 near Burns Harbor IN, where a lot of rolled steel for the auto industry is hauled on flatbed tractor-trailer rigs, 1993 -- "Tarp that load!"

Sounds like Pymatuning State Park, where the geese walk on the fish. 😎 I had to Google it just now, to get my mind straight, but we went there several times, back in the '60s & '70s. When they flooded that area, there was an old highway that was submerged, and we used to walk out until the water was over our heads. Which is tricky, when there are literally thousands of carp swimming into ya. 😲

It's also tricky, that there's a Pymatuning State Park in both Ohio and Pennsylvania, connected but seperate. 🤔😁
