Bicyclist killed in collision with car on Bayfront Expressway in Menlo Park
I've been pretty busy this last week, but can't believe I missed this until now. Sorry if this is old news but I couldn't find a thread on it already. I wish there were more details on what exactly happened; hard to imagine this happening without the driver, rider, or both, making serious mistakes.

There is a traffic light at that intersection. If the article is correct about the directions of travel, then someone ran the red light. Hard to believe that a bicyclist would run a red light to try to cross a 6 lane highway.

I think the problem is that most intersections have a yellow light of approximately 5 seconds. There are a lot of intersections that take longer than 5 seconds to clear on a bicycle. I can imagine the victim entering the intersection just as the light turned yellow or just after it turned yellow and not making it all the way through before the light changed.

Since the bicyclist was killed, and I doubt that intersection had cameras, I doubt we'll get the full story. Pretty sure the driver is going to say whatever is going to get him off the hook if he ran the light. There's always a chance he didn't run it though, but as johnny said, I doubt the cyclist was trying to run across a 6 line highway while having the red light.
I haven't been to the area, but looking at the map;
If the driver was headed north, and the cyclist heading east, than the cyclist has already cleared 3 south-bound lanes to have to be hit by north-bound traffic.
Do people usually wait at the center island if they get caught on a light change?
That could be a likely cause of getting hit along with driver inattentiveness.
Either way, I think it's driver's fault on this one.
It was not dark, since it was almost noon.
I would doubt that the cyclist would randomly jump out in front of a car.
"He was going so fast" comment by the driver leads me to believe he thought he could 'beat' the cyclist before he reached the intersection or something. A common assumption that drivers make that gets cyclist right hooked.
Map for reference

Terrible news.
I ride past there every single day, and stay off it (just take the mixed-use path). The driver would have probably been part of the daily crowd coming off the loooong Dumbarton bridge and down that short bit heading to the linkup with 101 at Marsh. Traffic there is consistently over-fast and unpredictable.

There are few places I won't ride, and on-or-crossing Bayfront is one of them. Traffic is too fast, too distracted, and too hurried.
