Hey there! Apologies if this is the wrong place for this...feel free to direct me elsewhere!

I am looking for some help, as I haven't ridden in a long time and just grabbed a bike from a local resale shop.

Grabbed this Schwinn 700cc Crosscut for really cheap because I really want to start biking again and figured I could use it as a start.

Anyone know anything about this? Any upgrades I should make to start?

Also, what's the best way to find compatible replacement parts? I need some pedals and have no idea how to find the right ones.

Hi and welcome! You have a hybrid bike. Kind of road and kind of off road. Made for casual riders. Any 9/16" pedals will fit your bike. Just decide what type you might be comfortable with. Parts should not be hard to find.
Are there specific issues with the bike? Post (drive side) pictures when you can.

seat - grips - tires - brake pads

depending on the condition / miles - could need cables, chain, cassette … (hopefully chainrings are still in decent shape) … wheels trued …

This is one of those bikes that will speak to you as you ride it more, to help direct you with a path of upgrades. If it is the same Crosscut I am thinking it is, it is part of a class of bicycles that is tops for versatility - dirt, road, gravel, grocery getter

Crosscut was the top of Schwinn's "Cross" line-up, Crisscross 2nd then Crossfit, so parts should be decent/good, if original. As other said above pedals should be easy, just pick the style you like. For most pedals you will need a pedal wrench or trip to bike shop, some narrow wrenches may work. Always a good idea to inspect tires on a used bike, checking for dried out rubber and splitting. New brake pads are inexpensive and can offer a significant upgrade to your braking, Kool Stop are highly recommended around these parts. If bike has any issues shifting you might need to make some derailleur adjustments (plenty of good video tutorials on youtube, Park tool has clear videos). If things look dirty or rusty the next level would be to replace cables (shifter and/or derailleur) and taking apart and putting new grease in wheel bearings and/or bottom bracket.

Crosscut is a fine Schwinn model but I believe the cross point was the top offering in those.

True, Crosspoint was the top in 1992 (same frame as Crosscut but half a pound lighter with component upgrade), but I think it was a 1 year model? Crosscut was top in '91,'93 & '94.

Welcome! One important point about pedals -- the left side (AKA "non-drive" side or NDS) pedal is REVERSE threaded. That is, facing the pedal from the left side of the bike, you turn the axle CLOCKWISE to remove it. Also, be sure to put a little grease or anti-seize compound on the threads when installing new ones.

That said, +1 on the comment above about versatility. I have a 1990 and it's a great ride for running errands, pounding rail-trails, or just bombing the city streets. One of the last lugged Schwinns.
