I bought a previous track frame from a local masters sprinter because he had bought himself a Zen frame and disc wheel in 2009, which I suppose is another point of difference to UKSI. The current disc wheels NZ use are made by a company that specialised in sailing equipment. All seem to hold up ok.

Oh for sure, but when you have a company doing the design that has long standing relationships with multiple manufacturers with extensive bike building experience (including one that has built "super bikes" for national track teams before) being forced to use someone else is not an ideal recipe for success.

I stand corrected, thanks for clearing that up. FWIW companies that don't have a history of frame building can still make some pretty cool stuff, New Zealand's had bits and (possibly) frames made by companies with composite experience, but whose main focus is not bikes, this company made the Zen bikes NZ used before the Avantis were being used by the Kiwis.

Well I mean there was a bit more work on Cervélos end than that but yeah. The British manufacturer thing was some sort of caveat with the money British cycling gets from the lottery if I recall correctly. They weren’t even a bike manufacturer, as far as I know the T5 is the only bike they’ve ever made. The feeling from Cervélo engineers was that it could have been an even better bike if they weren’t stuck using a manufacturer that they’d never dealt with before. It did beat the old UKSI bikes in stiffness and aero by a large margin though.
Something that raised my eyebrows about this new 2020 bike is that Lotus is involved. The engineer at Cervélo that headed the T5 project works at Lotus now. Somehow I doubt that’s a coincidence.
