I am certain with your intimate familiarity with similar materials, both at work and the current abomination in progress, that something appropriate and within your skill set can be readily assembled in the same general configuration as the type stand that you mentioned from genuine . . . . . . .

Of course it would have to be painted white with red trim, maybe on the threaded couplings, as it should match the supported entry to emphasize the extent of attention to detail that is usually reserved for the finest concours entries.

So I'm reading quickly through the last two posts, and picturing the threaded iron pipe made into a frame pump, looking like a pipe-bomb secured to the frame(?).

Would be a great sight-gag.

I would think any woodworker worth his salt could whip one up in a matter of minutes. A few bits of 2 X6 and some screws should create a holder with little effort. Smiles, Inspector Honk

I am not a fan of the downtube wrap stand - the bike can list to one side and cause the stand to fall out from under the BB. Did one show years ago where I was chasing this issue all night. Never again.

Provided it is on a level surface, I'm partial to the PRO (Shimano) stands. About $40 a pop and well worth it. I have seven of these things and there's always one in use. Excellent stability, doesn't put pressure on painted parts (other than the inside of the left dropout), and doesn't detract from the bike. I've also abused mine to no end, and other than a bit of surface rust, the first three are just as good a decade later.



The other four were recently purchased from the LBS for $15-20 each, used and in about the same condition. One was slightly bent, and some concentrated force cold-set it right back into place (I get no respect, I even have to cold-set my stands ).

I have used one on grass for exhibition, but I wasn't comfortable without sandbagging it on each side. Those are professional-quality 25lb bags, FYI - not some cheap toy bags sold on Amazon for amateur photographers.





You can even paint yours white and cut an H in the holes

Oh man! Cast iron pipe is a GREAT idea! I was planning on some exotic wood (I'm more of a woodworker than a metal or bike worker) but this idea has merit...



I would also then have a great place to put some giant red 'CAMPAGNOLO' stickers.

This is also an awesome idea...cast iron pipe would be obviously way too heavy for a bike already made out of solid lead...we are already too near the critical mass stage.

But you the perfect idea? A gas pipe look-a-like shell...made of CARBON FIBER!

So I have a newfound respect for leatherworkers...this is WAY harder than anything I've done with metal, wood, or any other material (except maybe that rare melding of tungsten carbide, fool's gold, and solid lead).

Started skiving the leather for the bar wrap. ONLY premium veg tan leather strips will do, and I also has this laying around in the garage from another bike I pulled it off of (so, free).

When wrapped on the bars, it gives an awesome look, but the thickness of the leather (which is already pretty thin, I think this is like 2-3oz stuff) sticks up a bit and while not really that unsightly, ONLY PERFECTION FOR FEMMINA LE GRANDE!!






Because they were previously installed, there is no consistency to the leather strap - its twisted, stretched, bowed, bent, creased, curly, and bunched up. Only way is to go slowly and do it by hand.

I only got 1/4 done (1 side of 1 bar wrap) and I'm DONE. Hands are aching. Gotta space this out over a few nights. Wow.

Thinking(??) along those lines a rotisserie like contraption would allow the entire bike to be seen from various viewpoints. This would minimize the possibility of overly vigorous enthusiasts from trampling more casual viewers that happen to be in their way.

FINALLY started tackling the rear brake adapter. I think that @Mad Honk might live up to his name, but we also like living on the dangerous edge over here at Le Grande HQ, whether it is regarding safety margins, or incurring wrath. Things there have been starting to come into focus, with the vision...which still isn't saying much, since the vision has gone from about 20/1800 to about 20/600. More about that later.


I made an important discovery. You know that rear derailleur cable stop (at the chainstay) that we threw into the Evaporust? Well, it came out looking GREAT. so I clean it up, all happy like, and go to put it on the chainstay, and....


Yep, doesn't fit. So, that is one more part we get to make. But I've got a good feelin' bout this one, and thank goodness for t-h-i-n dropouts, cause I'll be able to slide it ('it' being the one I fabricate from scratch cause of this dumb bike) on pretty easily. Honestly, the chromed metal one was a little clunky, so this one is going to look smooth and, and...svelte. And yes, waste more of my life. Just what y'all were hoping for.
