Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes. It’s rare but has been reported.

There are some reefs that you can get to without a boat, just fins and snorkel. The jungle around is mostly second growth, but it's close enough to Venezuela that there is a remarkable variety of bird life. Also some interesting native orchid species, if you're interested in that stuff and there in the flowering season. There are plentiful places to explore...or at least there were 30 years ago when last I visited.

A boat is better, for reef diving. There are plenty of people making a living there taking out tourists for reef exploring. The best zone (most light) is pretty much the top 30 feet anyway, and you can reach most of that without scuba gear, once you get good at equalizing your ear pressures.
Doing a live-aboard dive week in Belize with my daughter next month, while LSS goes to Antartica with her sister. We can't get daughter's husband to come with us. He grew up in Iceland, but he's scared of the water.

I don't have much experience with resorts, but we wandered into a place in the Dominican Republic when we were just looking for rooms. The clientele was 100% Italian and beautiful, but they let us stay at a great price. The food was very simple, but very good. Lots of grilled vegetables and local fish.

We were with LSS's mother who was an Episcopalian nun at the time and stationed at a mission nearby. We almost talked her into walking down the tops-optional beach in her habit the last day we were there.

I've always been advised that it's wise to stay within your resort in the DR, and don't go wandering around. Is that still the case?

We stay away from islands like Jamaica that have lots of crime directed toward tourists.

Addendum: I have stayed for a week or two at this place , long ago. It's far enough away from the town that it's private, to some extent, but within an leisurely walk of all the stuff the town provides in terms of support services. It's set up as separate cottages, and the location is right off the beach. I remember it as a nice vacation.

Got my old camera working again. If I squeeze it the battery indicator goes haywire but it worked today. Went riding around the neighborhood and took a couple snaps. Cloudy and cool but no wind.

I could look at the sun without retina damage.

Stopped at one of the parks and had a snack.

Went by the model airport and there were 5 guys there from the flight club. They invited me to come out sometime and take flying lessons with a trainer plane which has 2 controllers. They had electric jets which they said would go 150mph. One of the jets had a camera for p.o.v. flying. The guy was watching a lap top and had a view forward from the plane. Told me to come over and watch the landing. It was pretty amazing. I didn't take any pics of their stuff, though.

Not excited to work on those. They remain a small percentage of work at the shop for now.

I had a Raleigh Technium that I disliked for many reasons, but one of the big ones was the housing pinging around inside the top tube on rough roads - which in northern IL was all of them.

At Performance we got a few bike models that shipped with temporary guide tubing installed, we always hung on to that for cable replacement tasks.

Sometimes things go wrong and you get to spend some quality time with the Park magnetic cable fishing kit. But surely cable manufacturers are working on non-magnetic cable to render those useless soon.

That is not the way. I'd rather be stuck on a boat than in a cave.
