Yeah, I used proper bike bearing grease this time
Another thing you should consider is putting a protective barrier in front of your head set bearings to inhibit entry of grit thrown up off the front tire.

I have some Zep 2000 I use on the kids bikes that always seem to come by when I'm out in the yard. Neat stuff. It sprays out liquid that gels up. Really good for a quick lube on pedals.
I work on trucks and there is a different grease for each different use on a truck. Currently we have 8 different types in the stores.
30 years ago we had 2 types- Grease and Moli grease. Didn't matter which you used but the Moli grease was supposedly higher temp for wheel bearings.
I have only one grease in the bike shed though---and it does everything. That is called "Black Gold"---But it is green.

For headsets where a little friction costs you absolutely nothing, I see no reason to use anything thinner than boat trailer hub grease for your own bikes. For others? A thinner grease cleans up faster and therefore saves money. But if you drown your headset balls with BTHG, you will have to do nothing to them for years. Use so much there is no room for water, so grease oozes out all over when you install the fork. Do that and when you pull that fork, 1) it with be for another reason, not lubrication issues and 2) the grease around the ball will still be the original blue color.
It works just as well for all the other bearings you can get at if you can live with the friction. I use it for all my commuter's non-sealed bearings. Saves me a lot of work and hassle. Bearings get repacked when I am working on that part for other reasons, not because it's spring and I have to.

I've always used Singer Sewing Machine grease. High quality and comes in a squeeze tube.

With the high loads of a headset and probably the bottom bracket if it has loose bearing a heavy short fiber bearing grease should be used.

Yeah but you're saying it like Regular grease or white lithium grease doesn't go bad. It without a doubt goes bad. And alot sooner than later if used daily. (AS A WORK TOOL) Not daily as in personal use. Grease needs to be replaced with fresh yearly. As in every year if used daily. Daily for me means all day as in 10 to 12 hour shifts. 6 or 7 days a week.
Regular grease (including white lithium) from out of a tub or tube doesn't have that problem.

and I’ll say - in the intervening years, I’ve picked up one of these ^ little grease guns and it’s amazing. I have no idea out the dang thing works, but it does, and it’s a much better experience than a finger in the tub.

I was brought a bike and someone apparently decided that the best chain lube was grease. I don't know what forum they got that information from.

As a child I discovered I had the ability to warp time to my advantage. I can experience everything within a certain "common time" frame for almost everyone else, but actually only live through less time. It's kind of like how computers can condense files to take up less space, only I do it with time. So the OP posted a little over 11 years ago, but it's only 7 years to me. I forget sometimes that most people can't do this and I inadvertently reference my own time-space-continuum in ordinary conversation.

With the heavy shock loads a headset gets, use the heaviest grease you can find. Both of them are low speed high load bearings. use short fiber disc brake grease for cars. Heavy Phil wood grease is also good.

I keep my grease in the freezer. That keeps it nice and thick for when I need to use it.
