Emergency: is this Bianchi worth saving?

I just came back from the salvage yard where I found this pretty little frame. The headset moves smoothly but feels a bit grindy; probably needs new bearings. I tried to get a pic of the serial number, but no luck. So; should I go rescue it before it gets crushed?

I would just for the HS.

Frame looks to be sound/ok, forged DO's so should be a good enough frame, maybe.

Why not? You now have your clunker challenge frame. Smiles, MH

I would have preferred garbage gaspipe, but I suppose this one will suffice

Yes. That’s not a little frame. Do it at least for the headset.

It's probably an early to mid '80s Japanese or Taiwanese frame. What's on the dropouts?

Okay, I'll snag it; someone will want it. It'll have to wait until Monday, when they open.

Almost forgot; they also have this Raleigh Technium complete. Sorry for the bad pic. There were also Trek 800 and HardRock frames, but not really worth it.

You do realize that all this encouragement to pick it up comes from those of us with piles of spare components that we can put on a frame such as this for very little cost?
Hopefully you too have such resources, or a cheap local co-op with overflowing bins.
Me, I would wear a garlic necklace on my next visit to that place, make the sign of the cross with my fingers and tell that frame "Get thee behind me Satan!"

I do not have overflowing parts bins, and there's no way I'd be able to ride something that big anyway; what I have is a soft heart and an appreciation for nice bikes that aren't being made anymore, so I'd be passing it along.

That was before Walmart got big. Before that, I think he did a christmas movie. Daughter was a reporter of some sort.

I figured that since your previous bike searches were for the shorter statured...

It’s a good save. Those Japanese Bianchis were well made...and the Taiwanese as well.

OK here's the thing. Yes it may be a Bianchi but which one? Bianchi made bikes from basic $200ish recreational bikes up to very nice professional level bikes. Your first job is to figure out just what this and that may be impossible. While having a derailleur hanger and shifter bosses makes it a nice model it may well still be a three tube ChroMolly frame with Mangalloy or High Tensile stays or even a complete Mangalloy frame. It might be somewthing like an '84ish Special or Sport SS, there are lots of US market Bianchi catalogs on facistbook page feel free to look.

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this but the most important thing is to make sure the seatpost moves and will come out. If it won't budge it isn't a bargin and anyprice. Sadly I'd have to say if it won't fit you you need to let it go. Sounds like you'd have to buy all the parts and then you'd be upside down on a bike with no name.

If it fits the Technium, while not my cup o tea, might be a better bike. The Cantilevers appear to be alloy rather than plastic or plastic covered steel. If it has a nicer group on it like Mountain LX or Exage 500LX it might be worth overhauling and trying to resell.

Never! Kolchak 4evah!

Good point about the seat post. I wouldn't be building up the bike, I'd be passing the frame to someone and let them build it.

Damn, you've reminded me I've got a 5 disc set of "Kolchak: the night stalker" sitting on a shelf 3 feet away.
I may have to rip it to my Emby server tomorrow
