Is Burning Man Biketopia?
Bike camps at Burning Man - the 80,000, person festival in the Nevada desert - say that 90 percent of people use bikes as their primary form of transportation during the festival. There are a few problems in this Biketopia though. The Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance is encouraging them to apply for a Bike Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists - to experiment with different ways of solving community wide common problems in the cycling community. We cover this topic in the last episode of bike life radio:

I've seen what they do to bikes down there. More like a bike zombie apocalypse.

Biketopia! Where is it?
Some have said Black Rock City is "Biketopia" . . . it is where Burning Man the 80,000-person arts event happens in the Nevada desert every year. The city is built from scratch every year and 90 percent of the population ride bikes. This laboratory for mass population bike experimentation is a look into the future for any community and it has forewarnings and challenges that should be thoroughly examined. There is more about the wider bike community impact of this event in an episode of Bike Life Radio on the Dutch Cycling Embassy. Here is the episode:
Black Rock City now has bike and pedestrian only roads.

Not really a biketopia. You don't want to take your good bike there, since the desert dust is very alkaline and will corrode your bike parts. Plus all that dust gets into your chain & bearings.

...our bike co-op here, the Sac Bike Kitchen, is right off the Business 80 and also a few blocks from Hwy 50. Both are major routes to Nevada and Burning Man, from the Bay Area, where many people fly in, then rent either a car or a motorhome, to attend the festival. So we used to get a lot of people stopping off, to get their Burning Man bikes. I became quite adept at quickly repairing whatever was busted on some clapped out Walmart bike, to make it just usable enough to spend its last bit of useful product life, out on the playa.
I looked forward to the festival every year, as a way to get those bikes to go far away from me. I don't know how many of them ended up with fake fur glued to the frame. More than a few, I think.
