Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Hey I am old enough to remember when we could stock up and save on getting GP4000s tires from PBK for $28 each.

I am running low on tires and generally running GP5000 (clincher not tubular, 25mm and/or 28), looking around it seems the going rate is $70. Inflation indeed!!

Anyone know of a good, reliable source that might be the best value?

Based on what I've seen, they'll make you fly with a 100 knot headwind. I want to see you ride in that....

No. That's why I picked up all those Vittoria Corsas from Bike Closet. The problem is they're significantly slower than GP5Ks.

Yep. My MTB and gravel bike have both been adorned with a healthy dose of Wolf Tooth's color-coordinated bling. I also added color-matched JRC derailleur pulleys on both bikes. I don't thing they add any performance benefit, but I like the way they look

Phooey. I am pretty picky about my tires, so despite my thrift I will pony up whatever is necessary for the GP5Ks. I was hopeful to find them for 50-60 bucks a pop (not 70), what with the glut of bike parts etc. I would hope they would be on sale somewhere....

There is great value to be had in tire+tube setups. The cheapest stuff makes the biggest difference.

Yes.

I have tried offerings from Vittoria and Pirelli which might be 20% cheaper than Conti and maybe it's placebo, but I really like my Contis...so splurging on tires and tubes (I sometimes dabble in latex during the summer months) is worth it.

Merlin. 2-pack for $89. Not sure about shipping.

The Pro's Closet has 28s for $38 This may have been an old link. I couldn't find them on the site for < $70

According to Bicyclerollingresistance.com, the Contis are between 2.2 and 4 w lower RR/tire than the Vittoria Corsa 1.0 and 2.0. I noticed a difference between the Contis and the Corsas - the Corsas felt slower, and indeed WERE slower, on the same Sunday route, by about 0.4 mph over 59 miles,

I believe this, but honestly there is more to a tire than low RR. There is something about "road feel" that is tough to quantitate which I find with these tires and not others. It's subtle and might even be placebo, but I really like them the best.

The best, Jerry! The BEST!!
