Interesting perspective on the mid range road bikes back then. I see quite a few Miele bikes here in Canada so the backstory explains their popularity.

The provenance of materials was pushed pretty hard back then, as if anything Italian or French was superior to Japan or Taiwan. Now hardly anyone is concerned about where their carbon fibre frame is manufactured, or perhaps giving preference to Taiwanese production.

At the time Asian manufacturing was really diversifying their exports and displaying their confidence in their products. Look at any Toyota or Honda of that era today next to a Chevrolet or Ford of same time; you'd be out of your kind picking the latter.

Assembling quality bicycles was nothing new, the biggest challenge was getting the best they could put forth under professional athletes. Targeting the amateur and casual cyclist was a good strategy for them, definitely captured a healthy share of global market and more importantly, got people cycling!
