A new project has fallen into my lap!
Talking with my coworker about a recent Trek Antelope 830 build, he offered me his old MTB but couldn't remember what it was. He brought to work and its a fairly stock, '97 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo. From looking at the catalogs, online pics, etc., it appears to be a large frame. The stem and handlebars have been swapped and the stock bar-ends are gone. The original 3x8 drivetrain is complete and the hubs and rims run smooth and true. The headset is wobbly and appears to be missing the top cap (I've got a new one ordered). My plan is to dismantle, clean, lube and reassemble.

I have the same one in the roughly same size in dark Blue but it will upgraded with XTR/XT 30speeds, race face crank, easton stem, easton bar, continental tires, and mavic D521 rims and hope hubs

1990 Trek 970 Singletrack
Picked this bike up a few weeks ago, I believe the previous owners rode it a few times and it never saw the light of day again. After a full tear down, polish, wax lube, buff, and a little grease I built my winter commuter while I determine what my next move will be. Keep it as it was meant from the factory with full Deore DX and 21 speeds or modernize the bike with a 1x10 and clutched RD.
As it stands the bike is set up 36/17 singlespeed with studded 26x2.2 tires for my winter commute. It’s a fun bike to ride and look forward to riding it for many years to come.
Admittedly not my greatest photo but was too excited mot to share.

1994 Specialized S-Works M2 that received some upgrades. The additions include:
- RockShox Recon fork (replaced the original FutureShock Ti/CF fork)
- NOS Shimano XT brake/shifter assemblies
- Ergon grips
- New Albion Crankset
- RaceFace Chester pedals
- Origin 8 Stem (removed 130mm Ti)
- Specialized Fast Track tires
- XTR brakes (on it when I got the bike)

The bike is in great condition, no rust at all
with minimal paint worn away from poorly mounted fenders.

Oh thank heavens. There aren't that many 970s left in the world, and they're worth treating well. @Tango1, maybe an 800? Not junk but not super nice either.

I wonder if there's some sort of surface treatment we could spray onto our bikes, on all of the parts, that'd protect against 99.999% of such contamination during a rough winter. Some sort of spray over the rims, spokes, hubs, head unit, frame, bars, nuts/bolts. (I'm sure a company or someone has figured out something.)

I've got a gallon jug of the Star Brite Salt Off product. During the winter, I keep a spritzer bottle of the stuff, for zapping the bike, paintwork on the car, etc. Helps neutralize and get rid of the worst such stuff, during a wash. Though, like you, I wonder where it all gets ... even when washing it off soon after accumulation.

Acquired today from the original owner. Rear hub and freewheel have been replaced as have the chain, seat, post and grips. Can’t wait to get it out for a test ride.

I think that most of the more effective formulas they tested were on the waxy / sticky side, so you probably wouldn't want them on your bike, anyway.

The early 90’s 900 series were the last of Trek’s lugged MTB’s. That looks like it might be the largest size (tall guys motor things like that). I have a smaller, much more abused 950 that I left for my daughter in college. They are nearly indestructible.
Whichever way you go with the build is fine, so long as you ride it!

Picked up this 1996 Univega Alpina 500 last week. Another case of where the coating of dust protected the finish over the years. Bike actually looked more green prior to cleaning. Not ridden much at all, I think it's all original, nibs still on some of the tire lugs. Needs new cables and brake pads, shifters are a little stiff.
Came with a Gary Fisher Micro pump, Blackburn tank bag (with an unopened patch kit inside!). 22.5" frame is too big for me, so this won't be staying.

I was lured out into the country today (literally next to a town called Timbuctoo) by a pic of Mt. Fuji among a lot of other bikes. The Fuji was nowhere to be found, sold at a swap meet apparently but there was another bike that I could see in the pic that had bullmoose bars, Suntour Power thumbies and lugged fork crown. That bike was still there and had a very nice Sugino GT (48/42/34) with 170mm cranks (my favorite size) and some bear trap pedals. Not familiar with the frame maker, Procraft; seems they were know for BMX but also dabbled in MTB for a time. Will fix it up and decide if it's a donor or a rider. Either way it was a bargain and I'm scratching the itch to get a 26" bike back in the stable. For a few extra bucks I grabbed an '85 Nishiki Bel Air frame because I liked the measurements.
