I wouldn't get up at 4:40 in the morning if I didn't love the ride to work!

Actually it's kind of nice having the road mostly to myself.

Yeah, me too. And it's nice to see them coming up behind you since they have their lights on.

I'm upset right now because I can't bike, I don't have the right layers.

I have to get up and going about an hour and a half earlier to ride vs. driving. I love to ride.

I love hauling things on my xtra. I love the unused air of the early mornings, the rhythm of movement, the feel of gravity and centrifugal force as I corner or handle obstacles.

I love cycling.

i like bikes and riding them for the fact that they are hassel-free. they are elegant in their simplicity.
i like the fact that i can pace myself and not have to go too fast. i get nervous on the roads when i use my car. plus i am always worrying about the car breaking down and the expensive repairs.
i like the fact that i can see more of my surroundings on a bike. i feel i have more control over the experience of transporting myself on a bike. in a car in bumper to bumper traffic your like a stuck pig.
another plus that gives me peace of mind is that if anything goes wrong with my bike i can fix it myself or pay just pocket change to my local bike mechanic to fix the problem.

I've been cycling for fifty-one years, so I no longer have 'Stuffing's ebullience. . .if ever I did. That said, cycling is a long-term relationship that returns more joy each time I "throw a leg over". No big deal, just the comfort of long experience.

When I was a teen, i went on a week-long bike trip with a church youth group, an almost unheard-of thing in my circle at the time. After my return, my mother bought the loaner bike I'd ridden from the teacher that organized the trip.

That 10-speed Schwinn took me not only ALL OVER TOWN, but to a different world -- where passion was inflamed like I'd seldom experienced! My sense of freedom and joy took me to high school registration, commuting to my later 1st job... and to find my estranged father, who'd been basically run off by my mother!

Stupidly, i allowed car lust to come between me and the bike; it wasn't until after age 40 that I rekindled that passion, and now, nearly a decade later, I'm not about to let it go again! I'm car-free, have been for 5 years, ride everywhere I need to go, and for the days when riding just isn't the thing to do (weather & surfaces just TOO nasty), I take the bus.

I now have the goal in front of me to ride 90 minutes on my 90th birthday.

While I have broken bones for the first time in my life after starting to ride as much as I do, I love it too much, too deeply, to give it up. I feel younger, freer, more alive every day I throw a leg over the bike.

I'd rather have the bike in my life than a woman. It's not sex, but rides are pretty close to that level of pleasure!

I love being able to get places faster than a person driving a car or public transportation. I love being able to haul stuff home in my panniers. I love my new pink bar-end tape.

I gave up showering so I could ride to school/work without waking up too much earlier, you gotta have your priorities in order.

People asked me many times why I ride. I though about this many times and there is no single reason to it and I can never quite put it eloquently, I just... like it! It's complex, yet simple. It may take several paragraphs of explanation or just few words. What is it that makes me go out in the morning and ride in 20F weather with strong winds where people have hard time walking, or in pouring rain or in 90% humidity on a 90F day?

I enjoy driving too though. IMHO cars have place in life too and, like many other things, if used properly can enhance our life. But the American society developed a car fetish and succumbed to it. Thanks to Robert Moses and his hatred for human powered transportation and mass transit, thanks to greed and stupidity of auto industry and politicians USA has choked on traffic. We have underdeveloped rail system, poor mass transit because we are supposed to drive cars! Our highways are strangled by millions of tractor trailers and cars occupied by a single person!

We have become slaves of this system and bicycle, the most efficient machine known to humanity, lets us break away from it, become different, independent and better. It provides the ease of use, the utility, the flexibility and the feeling of freedom and control that is almost addictive. It makes us happier and healthier. It makes us feel like kids again.

Adam
