How many of you does this photo take you back?

Our jumps were a little larger though, but same crappy Columbia bikes.

Deinately a flash back. We would use a 2x6 and a cinder block. The real test was the 12 foot wide creek with about 2 feet of drop. Of course nobody made it across, but we all could hit the high notes in chorus.

ME ME ME! Only there would be a handful of kids lined up under the ramp! We would all fight for who got to be the last kid in the line, the most dangerous position!

In grade school I had a muscle bike from EJ Korvette's. Probably a Gerber, replacing a hand-me-down Stelber tank bike. THe muscle bike was red with a white seat. I rode that bike so much doing wheelies and skidding stops, the coaster brake wore out after 3 years.

The classic " torque-up to the right"

Lived through the Evel Knievil craze. Never saw anyone break a Stingray frame.

In our neighborhood, the benchmark was six metal garbage cans (upright) landing without a ramp and not crashing (the hard part). More than a few bent rear wheels and busted family jewels were the result of such daring (stupid) helmet-less behavior. Oh the joys of youth.

Broke the cheap metal at the stay to hub joint on a Murray.

Also broke the ramp after a long day of jumps with my cohorts. We brain surgeons were layers of plywood for the ramp. Ended up going right over the bars into a parked car, good times! That crash was talked about all summer long.

Oh yeah... just substitute the Sting Ray for a Schwinn Typhoon. Only took me one jump to learn to land rear wheel first!

Here's one of me in 1973, age ten or eleven, on my Mossberg MX, a great little bike for doing jumps. The ramp was made from a picnic table. Everybody wanted to be like Evel back then.

oh yea. we had a little dirt embankment adjacent to the alley that terminated in a neighbors front yard. we used to get a half block running start, hit that jump and land on the sidewalk and skid into the neighbors front yard lawn. it was a lot of fun.

Had a bud bent the front part of his banana seat "down" on a big drop. Not pretty.

I jumped the heck out of my huffy, destroyed it. Then the rents got smart and bought me a redline with mags.

Early 70s I had an old Sears 20" "stingray" clone that I put on some old enduro handlebars that I stole from the local motorcycle shop and I swapped out the fork from a Sears 27" 3 speed, with knobbies front and rear. That gave me my first taste of riding trails in mid state Ohio.

You guys have a few years on me - I had a Raleigh black burner and it took abuse well. Dirt ramps, pools, jumps we set up in parking lots...

I remember trying to jump through a swing set...it did NOT end well. Other good times involved riding them down slides at playgrounds...including once when we set up a jump at the end of the slide. This was sadly interrupted by a park employee who decided our brains were worth saving (or he just didn't want the paper wok).

Mine was a red Schwinn Typhoon...not a great jumper, but could sure take punishment! Did have to replace the back axle on it for SOME reason! Silly bearings/axle wend out on it! Had a friend who was getting into cyclecross...had a crazy fancy BMX and a Helmet...unheard of in the 70's!!!

I managed. Good old A238017, wish I had you back in honorable retirement. I was the neighborhood ramp maker. How we survived as intact as we did I'll never know.

Isn't that the Brady Bunch homestead in the background?

My "air" bike was a purple Stingray that seemed to love the abuse.

I was always the kid who recommended against doing whatever it was. So yeah, the photo brings me back. I remember recommending against trying to jump the board that was put up against the 50 gallon drum laid on its side. And I remember being proven correct in my recommendation.

I wonder if his teeth ever grew back?

Absolutely. West Los Angeles early 1970s - construction sites, racing around the block, cinder block / board ramps!
