still OK here . sunny .. took off the Mustache bars . fitted albatross bars *, need to re hook up the Drum brakes .
No Black Ice last year .. (014, snow/ice was 2 separate weeks with a week or so between them)
*014.. not happy with fit, Albatross were too close to my knees when I turn, got a bullmoose set,
LBS, take off, spot of rust, removed from another's bike, (they wanted something else).. So free.
Cut the width down .. stud bike has not been needed over this winter, when it got to 0C it was Dry & Clear..

Just put some new studs on this week, get them broken in before the snow flies. It's been 40 to 50 at night here in MN in November.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Wasn't sure if I should take the Pug or the Extrabike today... the Pug would have made lighter work of the piled up snow on the roads but isn't as fast where the cars have packed things down.
This can only mean that I need to build a fat extrabike although Stretch has been getting me through the winter for the last 5 years in fine form... I removed the front wheel drive until I get a new battery pack.

I recently picked up a 1993 Raleigh Portage XT100 MTB (Made in Canada) for$75 that is an impressive little rider.
It sports;
4130 chrome-moly tubes
26" Rigida alloy wheels made in USA
Suntour XR100 FD RD Cranks
Suntour MT2 Multi Terrain Twist Shifter
IRC X1 Pro 26X2.00 tires
neat raspberry/silver paint job.
I will be using it as a trail/ path/errand/winter bike.

Ran into a slight hiccup with my Moonlander setup. Its great that you can use lots of standard components with Surly's offset frames, but when using spacers to center a normal mtb rack it becomes impossible to remove the rear wheel. I might be able to reduce the spacers enough to get it out without interfering with my fender. Even without the rack I need to let most of the air out of the tires to get past the front / rear brake calipers.

Now a days I just put the studs on my main off road bike. At one time I had an older Cdale for winter riding but got tired of the V brakes not working when loaded up with snow. This pic is from last winter.

My wife's winter ride... it has gone through 6 wet Portland winters (and has seen a few snow days) and I have been getting it ready for more severe winter use.
2007 Breezer... aside from studded tyres it already had everything one would want in an all weather bicycle. With the full chaincase the maintainence interval on the chain is 15,000 km and it stays really clean.
I have installed a rear studded tyre since I snapped this... it is a fun ride on the snow and ice.
