50° and sunny at 8:30AM, my kind of day. 22.7 @1:51 on the Roubaix. That stop for lunch and slow 1.5 miles home on a full stomach kind of shoots the time average. Never pass up a free lunch (great salads) and free coffee.

Finally got in a solo ride this morning. The ride was 37 miles but since I forgot to start the ride, it's officially a 35 mile ride.

I don't get it. How do you do a ride at all if you forget to start? And if you rode 37 miles but, let's say for the sake of discussion, you didn't start your computer until you'd ridden 2 miles, didn't you still ride 37 miles?

Some things in this world are beyond me, I guess.

Below freezing this morning so too cold to bike commute since I'm in Spring mode. But, 15 miles in the sun in the 40's after work was good.

31 miles on a beautiful spring day. Very windy but mostly from the south and I was on a west by NW route and east by SE route, so the wind was never directly in my face. Stopped a few times to take photos, but overall I'm feeling like I'm needing fewer and shorter rests to recover.

Kinda funny at one point on the highest elevation with strongest gusts (between Aledo and Willow Springs, for folks familiar with that area): I kept getting odd sensations from the bike, like the rear tire had developed a bulge, or maybe the quick release wasn't locked down. I stopped a couple of times for safety checks, but everything was fine. Turned out to be sideways wind gusts following low on the ground, shoving the bike sideways. Felt like passing someone who playfully gave the rear tire a slight kick. Very odd sensation but after realizing what was happening I just ignored it the rest of the day.

I'm still averaging 12 mph, but was surprised to check Cyclemeter later and see I'm riding 15-18 mph steadily on some splits for two or three miles at a time. And these aren't downhill grades either. It sure doesn't feel like I'm going that speed. I just concentrate on a consistent cadence and pedal effort, without worrying about speed or time. I don't have any realtime devices, just the Cyclemeter app running in the background, with the phone in my pocket or handlebar bag. Mostly I like it for exploring and finding good routes to repeat and missed turns to avoid next time out.

I don't want to start a political argument here, but the science isn't wrong because you had mega-snow in April. In fact, one of the short-term ramifications is a greater frequency of larger storms. Storms are essentially a mechanism whereby heat is redistributed between the hot equatorial regions and the much colder poles. As long as the big blocks of ice at the poles have not yet reached equilibrium with the changing environment, meaning they haven't fully melted to their new smaller equilibrium sizes, there will be more occurrences of, ah, "thermal mixing events".

We had 5in of snow here and now very cold weather. It's kept me off the bike too. Bummer.

It's a Strava thing. I sometimes wonder how I ever rode at all before Strava and all these GPS bicycle computers.

Today's ride was with my buddy Steve. Temps were in the upper 60's and the wind was calm for the first 20-30 minutes. Then they picked up to around 17-20 mph with 25-30 mph gusts that were mostly side winds. At least I remembered to start my computer and got full credit for the 46 mile ride.

This we are well aware of. I am no global warming fan, however. The only thing that came out of the 70s that I agree with are the bikes.

Well, @jmm, I know you are an intrepid winter commuter, and your commuting “microenvironment" is about 20 miles north of mine, but I did ride last night as well as this AM to meet the Activity Challenge.

It was 27⁰F this AM at my beginning in downtown Boston, with a simultaneous report of 16⁰F at my suburban terminus 14 miles away, with no notable wind, and roads were salted, with debris, but free of snow.

I've raised the quill stem about 2" from bottom, which now puts the down-turned bars about 1/2" above saddle height when measured from the center end of the grips. But the position where I actually hold the grips is about an inch above saddle height.

I rode 31 miles Tuesday with the bar slightly elevated another 1/2", stopping briefly about every 5-10 miles to stretch, snap a few photos, etc., usually for only a few minutes. It was less uncomfortable than the previous week.

I'll try this position a few more days, then maybe raise it another 1/2". But it feels like I'm pretty close to a good compromise between efficiency for longer rides, and enough comfort to not suffer the next day.

Took the day off yesterday to rest the shoulder (Drs. Orders) and took the trike out today for 19.9.@1:52 miles. Takes a bit more "push" but I love the beast.

Got a real late start this morning (10AM) but it was warm enough for shorts. I'm sure I blinded people on the bike path with my ultra-white legs (heh heh). 19.2 @1:29 on the Allez and tuna salad for lunch.
